    Lorna Docken Aagaard, '60, widow of George Aagaard, the second dean of the UW School of Medicine, died Sept. 21. She was president of the Medical School Auxiliary, the University Hospital Auxiliary and the University Faculty Wives. She also helped found the University Hospital Volunteers, was a volunteer at UW Medical Center for more than 40 years and was a docent at the Burke Museum for 20 years. She was 86.

    James Charles Carrico, a physician instrumental in Harborview Medical Center's rise to national prominence in trauma care, died in July. Carrico came to Seattle in 1974 to become chief of surgery at Harborview - but was better known for being on duty as a first-year resident at Dallas' Parkland Memorial Hospital's emergency room on Nov. 22, 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was brought to the hospital after being shot by Lee Harvey Oswald. Carrico served at Harborview until 1983, when he became chief of surgery at the UW medical school, a post he held until 1990. From there, he went to the Univ. of Texas, where he retired in 2000. He was 67.

    Bernard Haldane, who with his wife, Jean, established the Dependable Strengths Project at the UW, died July 21. The program was one of the world's foremost career development programs and was used by such companies as Boeing, Microsoft, Harvard Business School and the U.S. Forest Service. He was 91.

    Siegfried Hansen, '33, an electrical engineer who pioneered the hard spacesuit now used in NASA missions, died June 28. He designed early radar systems and worked on vacuum tubes for General Electric. In his quest to improve the vacuum tube, a key component of early electronic devices, he devised a suit to be worn in the airless atmosphere of a vacuum. He was 90.

    John I. Hedges, professor of oceanography, died July 26. He joined the UW faculty in 1976 and his research focused on the cycles of carbon in the ocean. A recipient of the Geochemical Society's Alfred R. Treibs Award in 2000 for lifetime achievement, he was 56.

    Benjamin A. Jayne, professor of wood physics and affiliate professor of fisheries and forest resources, died Sept. 3. He joined the UW faculty in 1966 and taught until 1976, when he left to become dean of the Duke Univ. School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He also held an endowed chair at Penn State Univ. He was 73.

    William Pigott, '55, '57, associate professor emeritus of finance and business economics, died Sept. 15. The San Francisco native joined the UW faculty in 1955 and taught until his retirement in 1982. He was 74.

    Eugene Allen Wright, '35, '37, a well-known local judge who served more than 30 years on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, died Sept. 3. Before being appointed to the federal bench by President Nixon in 1969, he was associate judge of the practice court in the UW School of Law and also taught in the UW School of Communications. He was 89.
