Keeping the Connection: New Legacy Scholarships for UWAA Member Families

It's natural to want your children and grandchildren to attend your alma mater. If you are the Person family of Gig Harbor, you've had four generations of Huskies in your family: great-grandfather Max, '47; grandfather Dave, '49; father Jack , '75; and brother and sister Kerry, '00, and Kimberley, '01.

Then there is the Felthous family. Robert Felthous, '42, of Friday Harbor, celebrated the graduation of his granddaughter, Alisa, '01, two years ago. She was the seventh Felthous to receive a bachelor's degree from the UW. Robert was the first. The others are David, '61; Susan, '61; Alan, '67; Linda, '72; and Dean, '72

These legacy families are an important link to the past--and the UW's future. To help continue the tradition, the UW Alumni Association is starting a Legacy Scholarship Program that offers two $2,500 awards and five $500 awards each year to eligible children and grandchildren of UW alumni.

The program is open to current UW students from legacy families. Applicants must be enrolled full time and on track to be a junior or senior for Fall Quarter 2004. The applicant's sponsor, a parent or grandparent, must be a UW graduate and current dues-paying UWAA. A minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstration of financial need are required.

To apply, students must submit:

A typed, one-page personal letter describing the impact UW has had on them and their family.

An unofficial transcript through Fall Quarter 2003.

A typed list of not more than one page which details campus/community service and leadership activities.

A copy of their 2004-05 Student Aid Report, issued by the Dept. of Education after the parents and students file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If the report is not yet available, applicants must submit the date they filed a FAFSA.

The above materials must be postmarked by March 1, 2004 and sent to:
UWAA Legacy Scholarship Program
1415 N.E. 45th Street
Seattle, WA 98105

Award recipients will be selected on the basis of financial need, scholastic achievements, leadership and community service. For more information, call Aileen Kelly at 206-543-0540 or 1-800-AUW-ALUM.
