    Ray Bennett , former UW golf coach, died May 15. He coached at the UW from 1957-69, leading the Huskies to Pac-10 titles in 1961 and 1963. He was 80.

    Margery Strauss Friedlander , a Seattle philanthropist who funded the Strauss Chair in the Dept. of Surgery at the UW School of Medicine, died April 7. She also funded a prominent annual lecture series, the Strauss Lectures, in honor of her father, a famous UW surgeon. She was a founding member of the Seattle Chapter of ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists), which raises money to fund fellowships for graduate students in science and medicine at the UW. She was 85.

    Clifford L. Peek , ’29, associate professor emeritus of physical and health education, died April 9. A former Husky basketball star, he taught at the UW from 1938-75. After he retired, he volunteered as the scorekeeper for the Husky basketball team for many years. He was 98.

    Wes Wehr , ’50, ’54, who developed the most productive source of plant fossils in North America near the town of Republic, Wash., died April 12. He served as an unpaid affiliate curator at the Burke Museum for many years. He was 74.

    Peter Wootton , professor emeritus of radiation oncology, died May 3. He headed the medical physics division at the UW School of Medicine and served on the faculty from 1959-95. The Wootton Professorship Chair in the Dept. of Radiation Oncology was established in 1993. He was 80.

    Brock Adams , '49, who rose from UW student body president to a 43-year political career on the national stage, died Sept. 10. He was the nation's youngest U.S. attorney, the first chairman of the House Budget Committee, President Carter's secretary of transportation and U.S. senator from Washington. He was 77.

    John Corbally, '47, '50, the first president of the John T. and Catherine D. MacArthur Foundation, died July 23. While serving as president and board member, he helped grow the foundation's assets from $780 million to more than $4.5 billion and the foundation gave more than $3 billion in grants. He also served as president of Syracuse University and the University of Illinois. He was 79.

    Harold Ehret, who served as vice president for continuing education from `987-88, died Aug. 22. He was 74.

    Else Geissmar, associate professor emeritus of music, died July 20. A child prodigy who escaped Nazi Germany, she taught piano at the UW from 1947-76. She was 96.

    Carl Frederick Hanneman, associate professor emeritus of social work, died Sept. 2. He taught at the UW from 1959-95 and served as director of the social work school's Spokane program.

    Leon William Hevly, '53, director emeritus of Instructional Media Services, died July 26. He established the UW's closed circuit TV services division and oversaw the development of a multi-state distance-learning network to provide graduate instruction by video in subjects including electrical engineering and medicine, making the UW a leader in the field. He was also the voice of STAR, the UW's automated telephone registration system. He was 74.

    James P. Jans, professor emeritus of mathematics, died July 6. He joined the UW faculty in 1957 and taught until his retirement in 1989. He was 77.

    Bernard John Nist, '48, '62, lecturer emeritus of chemistry, died July 4. He was a longtime chemistry lecturer who contributed important early research in NMR spectroscopy. He and his wife, Claudine, established an endowed fund in chemistry in 1993 to support research and graduate students. He was 84.

    Ronald Phillips, professor emeritus of music, died Aug. 1. A mainstay of the Seattle Symphony's clarinet section for 56 years, he taught music at the UW for 30 years. He was 98.

    Donald Rogers, research professor emeritus of fisheries, died Aug. 13. He joined the UW faculty in 1969 and retired in 1997. He was 71.

    John Rohrer, '38, associate professor emeritus of architecture, died July 4. The only architectural illustrator on the faculty of the UW College of Architecture and Urban Planning for many years, he taught for 37 years at the UW and retired in the 1980s. He was 90.

    Kayla Skinner, '42, a major UW and Seattle philanthropist, died July 10. She helped start the President's Club to raise money for the UW, organized the Seattle chapter of ARCS (which provides scholarships to UW science students) and was a major donor to Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center. She was 84.

    Robert Adolf Steiner, '33, '36, associate athletic director under Jim Owens, died Aug. 10. He spent 25 years in the UW athletic department. He was 93.

    Stephen E. Tabet, '92, '93, associate professor of medicine and senior fellow of medicine, allergy and infectious diseases, died July 6. He initiated a program to improve the care of patients with HIV and HCVB in the state of Washington's corrections system. He was 42.

    Vera Maryann Waltz, '44, lecturer in the School of Physical and Health Education, died June 8. She did groundbreaking research in movement. She was 82.
