Stepping Out, Serving Others

Jan. 19 is just around the corner, a day to celebrate the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. In remembrance of the Nobel Peace Prize winner, the University of Washington is teaming up with the United Way of King County to host a day of service. At 8 a.m., volunteers will be greeted in the Husky Union Building for the kickoff of the ninth annual MLK Day event. Last year more than 1,100 people participated, working on projects for nonprofit organizations around the greater Seattle area. Whether by collecting garbage, planting trees or cleaning dishes, volunteers will be answering Martin Luther King's most pressing question, "What are you doing for others?" Volunteer registration begins Dec. 9.
