1930

Neal Fosseen, '30, Spokane, received the 1995 Distinguished Citizen Award from the Air Mobility Command for his continued support of the men and women of Fairchild Air Force Base.

William Sweet, '30, Rio de Janiero, Brazil, graduated from Harvard Business School in 1932 and worked in Washington, D.C., New York and Pittsburgh before going to Brazil in 1942 as part of the Joint Brazil-U.S. Military Commission. He was president of the Brazilian subsidiary of Liquid Carbonic for 20 years. Now he owns two Coca-Cola franchises.

Robert McCament, '33, Ventura, Calif., and his wife sold their home in Glendale, Calif., and moved into a retirement home in Ventura, where they have a two-bedroom cottage.

Negley England, '35, Jackson, Miss., is retired from the Navy Reserve, United Technologies and England's Sailboats Co. He has two sons, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Clinton Corliss, '37, Spokane, and his wife Elizabeth, '34, celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in September. They have raised three daughters and have seven grandchildren. Their oldest granddaughter graduated from the UW School of Medicine in 1993.

1940

Shirley Familian, '42, Los Angeles, received the Elaine Peterson Special Achievement Award for her outstanding volunteer contributions to public broadcasting. The National Friends of Public Broadcasting presented the award.

Richard Scherrer, '42, Nordland, received the 1995 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the UW Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics for his contributions to the field of aerodynamics. He designed the XST airplane, the predecessor of the F-117A stealth fighter and the B-2 stealth bomber.

Attention, Classes of 1944, 1945 and 1946

The classes celebrating their 50th reunion in 1995 announced their class gift would be a World War II memorial in honor of UW students, faculty and staff who gave their lives for our country during the war. Herb Bridge, '46, Seattle, and his wife, Shirley, '45, were awarded the 1995 A.K. Guy Award from the YMCA of Greater Seattle for outstanding community volunteerism.

Doris Warbington, '49, Seattle, continues to teach business writing and grammar, and career and life planning at Shoreline Community College.

1950

Edwin Wise, '50, Tacoma, works for the state's Dept. of Revenue in the timber tax division.

W.A. Pete Withers, '50, Martinez, Calif., writes to say he and his wife have 14 grandchildren. "The '50s were spent in the service, the '60s working in New Orleans, the '70s working in San Francisco, the '80s working on retirement plans and now, in the '90s, enjoying being retired," he says.

Richard M. Philips Sr., '51, Yakima, and his wife, Patricia, '72, have a new granddaughter, Colleen Michelle Devine.

Clayton Bradshaw, '52, Lyndhurst, Ohio, and his wife, Lois, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in September. Their two daughters from Minnesota and California will join them.

Art Victor, '53, Jonesboro, Ga., retired from his Army civil service job in February and is moving back to San Antonio after a 3 1/2-year absence to be near family.

Jack Hupp, '54, Columbia, S.C., retired in 1992 after a career in the insurance business.

Marilyn Rogers, '54, Renton, enjoyed a career of teaching physical education in public schools and summer travel to Europe. Now retired, she enjoys sports activities and is president of the Jet Cities Sweet Adelines chorus.

Lawrence Bailey, '55, Seattle, and his wife Maxine, '67, have retired from careers as an airline captain and a dental hygienist, respectively. Since May 1992, they have been cruising on their sailboat Shingebiss II.

Richard Komen, '55, Seattle, was named to the advisory council to the board of directors of Uwajimaya, a Seattle distributor, manufacturer and importer of Asian products.

John Kays, '56, Sequim, and his wife, Darlene, '54, have two children and two grandchildren. John got his master's from the Univ. of Oregon after 34 years of teaching, and is an immigration inspector at Port Angeles. Darlene retired from teaching in June.

Marjorie Palmer Passler, '56, Bellevue, is a member of the Garfield Golden Grads, an organization that formed in 1988 and has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to Garfield High School. At the group's eighth annual luncheon in June, she made presentations honoring the late Robert Waldo, '46, a former UW administrator, and A.L. Schmalle, a Garfield chemistry teacher.

Janet Brandt, '58, Kirkland, was appointed chair of the Columns Advisory Committee. Brandt recently retired as managing editor of the Tacoma News Tribune. She succeeds Jim King, '48, former executive editor of the Seattle Times, who was chair for two years.

Donald Rogers, '58, Anchorage, Alaska, retired last December after 28 years as an Alaska state medical examiner.

Daniel Sandberg, '58, Sacramento, Calif., moved to California after graduation and has practiced law in Sacramento for more than 30 years.

Thordis Harden, '59, Hixson, Tenn., retired after 30 years as executive director of the Chattanooga/Hamilton County Regional Planning Committee.

Preston Thomas, '59, Sunriver, Ore., and his family returned to the Pacific Northwest after "escaping the political and economic shambles of the northeast, Connecticut in particular!"

1960

Suzanne Gunderson Sedlewicz, '60, Menlo Park, Calif., is a retired teacher and business owner. She volunteers with Spanish speaking people to help them learn English.

Robert L. Bailey, '61, Singapore, is vice president of the records management group at Transnational Company Private Ltd. He is responsible for new records management and product and service development in 20 countries.

Tomio Moriguchi, '61, Seattle, was elected to the new position of chairman of the board and CEO of Uwajimaya, one of the West Coast's largest importers, manufacturers and distributors of Asian products.

Becky Sisley, '61, Eugene, Ore., received the 1995 Honor Award from the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports. She is a physical education professor at the Univ. of Oregon.

Fred Hilpert, '62, Riverbank, Calif., is chairman of communication studies at California State Univ., Stanislaus.

Jodene Scaylea Hawkins, '65, Silverdale, graduated from seminary in 1990 and is the rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Seattle.

Rick Redman, '65, Seattle, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Husky Hall of Fame.

James Paul, '66, Edmonds, is vice president and dean of academic studies at the Seattle Conservatory of Music.

Phyllis Weiss, '66, Northridge, Calif., is district manager for the Pasadena, Calif., Dist. of the Social Security Administration.

Robert Wade, '67, Fairfax, Va., retired last December after 24 years as an FBI special agent. He is now a vice president of the Parvus Co., a Maryland security firm.

David R. Anthony, '68, '70, '72, Seattle, is proprietor of Renaissance Books, specializing in direct mail sales of used and out-of-print books in the history of ideas.

David W. Becker Jr., '68, Twin Falls, Idaho, was promoted to colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve in April. He was also elected to membership in the Society of Medical Consultants to the Armed Forces.

Gary Hickernell, '68, Ossining, N.Y., is an associate professor of chemistry at Keuka College.

Jeff Reade, '68, Park City, Utah, reports that his son, Joshua, started as a freshman at the UW in September.

1970

Sibyl James, '70, Seattle, received a grant from the Seattle Arts Commission to support the writing of a sequel to her 1993 book of stories, The Adventures of Stout Mama.

Bill Ransom, '70, Grayland, is a visiting lecturer teaching creative writing at Southern Utah State Univ. He just had two books published, including Learning the Ropes: A Creative Autobiography.

Gaylord Reagan, '70, '71, Bellevue, Neb., will have his article Teams, American Style published in the 1996 Annual: Volume 2, Consulting.

Ray K. Robinson, '70, Richland, is president and founder of RKRI, a management consulting firm specializing in federal technology, management consulting and public-private partnerships.

Bill Buerger, '72, Scottsdale, Ariz., is program director for eight outpatient hemodialysis facilities in Arizona for Renalwest L.C. He received his master's in health care administration in 1986 from San Jose State.

Richard Harbert, '72, Redmond, is president of RH2 Engineering.

Mark Sheppard, '72, '81, Vashon, is co-editor of the newsletter for the Washington Alliance for Arts Education.

Betty Jane Narver, '73, Seattle, was elected vice president of the Seattle Public Library's board of trustees. She is director of the Inst. for Public Policy and Management in the UW Graduate School of Public Affairs and the recipient of the 1991 UW Outstanding Public Service Award.

J. Scott Menard, '74, '90, Colbert, became assistant superintendent of Marysville School Dist. after spending five years in the Mead School Dist. in Spokane. His wife, Claudia, is a school psychologist, and daughter, Maia, is 12.

Jim Kelsey, '75, Seattle, has been teaching economics, statistics and business courses at Seattle Central Community College since 1989.

Cmdr. Richard Weyrick, '76, San Diego, departed for a six-month overseas deployment aboard the amphibious assault ship USS New Orleans.

Kevin K.L. Ching, '77, '81, Honolulu, is chief of dentistry at the Queen's Medical Ctr. in Honolulu. His son, Sean, celebrated his second birthday on July 2.

Mark Click, '77, Baltimore, is a pharmacist at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He and his wife, Lynn Wuesthill, who were married in 1988, have six adopted children.

Theodore Lucas, '77, '82, Balboa, Panama, is the deputy general counsel to the board of directors of the Panama Canal Commission.

William Ayer, '78, Bellevue, was elected vice president of marketing and planning for Alaska Airlines.

Steve Robbins, '78, East Wenatchee, and his wife, Suanne, have two children, Chase, 7, and Danielle, 4. He owns L.S.E. Inc., and Robbins Garage Door Co.

Cory J. Smith, '78, Seattle, is director of manufacturing for Ostex International, Inc., a Seattle biotechnology company.

1980

Frederick H. Dore Jr., '80, Silverdale, has joined Olympic Internal Medicine Assoc. in Bremerton, a private practice in internal medicine. He and his wife, Pamela-Marie Sandbloom, '81, have three children.

William M. Brown, '81, Auburn, completed his M.B.A. at City Univ. He is a contracts administrator at Precision Machine Works in Tacoma.

Jeff Swift, '82, Great Falls, Mont., opened an orthopedic outpatient physical therapy clinic, River's Edge Physical Therapy, in Great Falls.

Dennis Brooke, '83, Auburn, is the new product development manager for Base-Line, an Auburn graphic arts manufacturer. He and his wife, Laurie, returned to Washington state after 11 years.

Brian Hart, '83, Seattle, is an associate at Puget Sound Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Seattle. In March, he was certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Cameilia Lee, '83, Seattle, is a special education high school teacher in the Seattle School Dist.

Bruce Monroe, '83, '89, Seattle, received his M.F.A. from the musical theater writing program at New York Univ.'s Tisch School of the Arts.

Christopher Benis, '84, '88, '89, Mercer Island, formed the law firm of Benis & Spence, practicing real estate and corporate law, with offices in Seattle and La Conner.

Terry Fox, '84, Gotha, Fla., holds a sales management position in the citrus products industry with Winter Garden Citrus Products Coop.

Andrew Gorski, '84, Seattle, is an associate of the multidisciplinary engineering firm of David Evans and Assoc. He specializes in transportation and port projects.

Capt. Julio Lopez, '84, Vancouver, Wash., flies HH-60G Pavehawk rescue helicopters out of Portland. He spent 10 years with the Army before transferring to the Air Force.

Kenneth Troske, '84, Alexandria, Va., and his wife, Suzanne, welcomed son William Jefferson on Feb. 22, 1995.

Brian Wans, '84, Slidell, La., his wife, Barbara, and their 2-year-old daughter, Alyssa, moved to the New Orleans area in April. He is still working for Shell Oil.

Heather Doran Barbieri, '85, Seattle, has a short story, "Spirit Tree," in the Left Bank #8: Pursuit of Happiness anthology. Another story, "Vessel," was a winner in the 1995 Ian St. James Awards, an international competition based in England. She was also a double winner at the 1995 Pacific Northwest Writers Conference competition.

Mike Cragg, '86, Durham, N.C., and his wife, Paige, had their second child, Michaela, last fall. He is the sports information director at Duke Univ.

Jeffrey Eaton, '86, Seattle, recently opened a practice in child and adult psychotherapy. He trained at the Child Behavior Clinic at the UW's Child Development and Mental Retardation Ctr.

Roger Sklar, '86, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is the general manager, Malaysia, for American President Lines. He was married in August to Sarah Burman.

Heather Cooper, '87, Chicago, was married to Jeffrey Christenson, '87, on Feb. 20. She is practicing commercial real estate law in Chicago while Jeff is the chief resident of internal medicine at the Univ. of Chicago.

Patricia (Trish) Darcy, '87, Waldorf, Md., is chief, program evaluation branch, in the logistics management division at U.S. Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Joe Ketterl, '87, Seattle, is a Ph.D. candidate in materials science and engineering and working for EdTek, a Kent high-tech startup firm which manufactures solar energy collectors.

Carrie Mack Stewart, '87, Seattle, was married to Mark Stewart on July 16, 1994. She is a senior test engineer at AT&T Wireless Services Aviation Communications Div.

Scott Svoboda, '87, Lustre, Mont., received his master's in church music in 1994 and is teaching music at a K-12 school in Lustre while pursuing a teaching credential. He and his wife, Tracy, are expecting their fourth child in January.

Naomi Umino, '87, '91, Seattle, works for GLY Construction.

Thomas P. Welch, '87, '91, Portland, Ore., finished his residency in psychiatry at Oregon Health Sciences Univ. in June. He is a staff psychiatrist at Network Behavioral Health Care.

Linda Casey, '88, Seoul, South Korea, and her husband are stationed at the 121st General Hospital. She is the chief of nursing education and staff development.

Paul Ducic, '88, Heidelberg, Germany, is a V.I.P. helicopter pilot supporting the commander-in-chief, U.S. Army in Europe. He and his wife, Suzi, have two children, Michael, 4, and Christopher, 1.

Daniel Good, '88, Everett, was married to Vicki Wilson on Sept. 30. He works at Harborview.

Beth Ann Keeler, '88, Silver Spring, Md., is director of annual giving and special events at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was a development officer at Harborview.

Steve Masterson, '88, San Francisco, has been married to Amy Gregg Masterson for three years. He works for Instill, a software startup which electronically links restaurants and institutional food service operators to their distributors.

Liz Hager Spiller, '88, Olympia, and her husband, Ryan, announce the birth of their second child, Jake Ryan, on April 8.

Lynn Kerr Beeman, '89, Poulsbo, married Marty Beeman on May 13. She is the operations manager of Columbia Pacific Securities in Seattle.

Bradley Holt, '89, Wilmette, Ill., married Jennifer Ivers in 1993, received his M.B.A. from the Univ. of Chicago Graduate School of Business in 1994, and is a financial consultant for Price Waterhouse in Chicago.

Kathleen Ann Lyngaas Hunt, '89, Seattle, and her husband, James, welcomed their first child, Peter James, on March 22. She runs a crafts business and association management business out of her home.

Michael J. Kennedy, '89, Creve Couer, Mo., is a third-year resident in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. He plans to pursue a fellowship in infectious diseases.

Cliff McIntyre, '89, Albuquerque, N.M., practices criminal defense law.

Catherine Ryan, '89, Fayetteville, N.C., completed the Officer Advanced Course at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio and moved to Fayetteville, where she now teachers military LPN students at Womack Army Medical Center.

Michael S. West, '89, Williamsburg, Va., completed his fifth year of a Ph.D. program in physics at the College of William and Mary. He was married to Diana Burghard on April 8.

1990

Edward W. Chin, '90, Seattle, works for the Sverdrup Corp., a nationwide architectural-engineering firm. He is working on the modernization and renovation of a terminal at Logan Airport in Boston.

Amy Hewitt, '90, Lynnwood, had a daughter, Jacqueline, on June 19, to go along with brother Nicholas, 6. She works for Everett Mutual Savings Bank's North Creek Branch.

Cynthia Jacox, '90, Seattle, completed her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Biola Univ. and will be joining a private practice in Kent.

David R. King, '90, Williamsburg, Va., was promoted to commander in the Coast Guard. He was transferred from Alaska to the Coast Guard training center in Yorktown, Va., where he serves as the comptroller.

Susan Ladd, '90, West End, N.C., is an endangered species biologist. She has worked with the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker for more than two years at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Brian Salak, '90, Lake Highlands Ranch, Colo., is a reports analyst with Nations Way Transport.

Betty Bennett, '91, Poulsbo, is the first independently practicing nurse practitioner to be authorized to participate in the care of hospitalized patients at Harrison Memorial Hospital.

William Fleck, '91, Forks, is the city attorney/planner for the City of Forks. He and his wife, Cheri, celebrated the birth of their first child, Anastasia Elizabeth, on July 10.

Jennifer Hadley, '91, Tucson, Ariz., is in her second year of law school at the Univ. of Arizona. She received an award for outstanding oral advocate in a moot court competition.

Suzette Madson, '91, '93, Bellevue, is working as a physical therapist at Eastside Athletic Rehabilitation in Bellevue.

Kelly Cousyn McCartney, '91, Schertz, Texas, is a first lieutenant in the Air Force, working as a materials engineer at Kelly Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Stella Moreno, '91, Ellensburg, is associate professor of Spanish at Central Washington Univ.

Kay Diane Rice, '91, Redmond, traveled to Japan as a grantee of Shunju Club Seattle. She is also listed in 1995-96 edition of Who's Who of American Women.

Mark Ward, '91, Seattle, is a guitar player with the band The Gears.

Roberta Schwartz Wennik, '91, Edmonds, has written articles on nutrition, a book on fat and cholesterol, and has a new book, Beyond Food Labels, coming out in April, published by Perigee Books.

James M. McCoy, '92, Seattle, is international operations manager for a Seattle biotechnology company.

Mary Kaye Owen, '92, Renton, has been recognized as a nationally certified teacher of music, specializing in piano, by the Music Teachers National Assoc.

Karen Walter, '92, Seattle, is in her third year as a watershed coordinator for the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe. She analyzes and responds to land use planning as it affects salmon.

Linda Walchli, '92, Bellevue, married Gregg Walchli in September 1994. She is working as a transportation planner in Seattle and ran her first half-marathon and her first marathon this year.

Christine S. Yee, '92, Seattle, received her master of laboratory animal science degree from Hahnemann Univ. in Philadelphia.

Susan Baird-Joshi, '93, Kirkland, is president and owner of the Application Works, a company specializing in database development.

Carl Spence, '93, Seattle, handles public relations and marketing for the Seattle Intl. Film Festival.

Shasta Turner, '93, Claremont, Calif., received her M.A. in English from the Claremont Graduate School in spring. She received the Jonathan Dolgen Scholarship to pursue her Ph.D. work, which includes fellowship awards of approximately $19,000.

Alicia Vining, '93, Davis, Calif., is in the teaching credential program at California State Univ., Sacramento. She earned her multiple subjects credential and planned to earn her learning handicapped credential in December.

Alice L. Anderson, '94, Bremerton, traveled in Spain and Portugal. She also was an ESL tutor through the Literary Council and worked on contract to US West Communications.

Perry Asher, '94, Bothell, is the assistant to the city administrator of Monroe.

Jennifer Barrett, '94, San Francisco, is attending the San Francisco Conservatory to get her master's of music.

Shannon Briggs, '94, Arlington, Va., is employed at the Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers in Washington, D.C., and has begun work on her master's in personnel development.

Mark Brower, '94, Seattle, works for Tams Consultants, which specializes in port and roadway work. He is engaged to Cindy Egeter, '94.

Nicole Christie, '94, Kirkland, is a sales assistant at KRWM-FM (Warm 106.9).

Sean Eagan, '94, Falls Church, Va., is pursuing his master's at George Washington Univ. and had his thesis, "The Expanding International Agenda for State and Municipal Governments" published in International Affairs Review.

Natalie Emken, '94, Glendale, Calif., is working in the international department of the Los Angeles law firm Lyon & Lyon.

Celia Hyman, '94, and Ray Baculi, '94, Bellevue, were engaged in May. They met in the M.B.A. program in 1992.

Christine Kreischer, '94, Ronnenberg, Germany, is taking classes at the Univ. of Hannover and is working on her thesis on environmental planning.

Karen Larsen, '94, Chengdu, China, is teaching English in China as part of a two-year exchange program through the Mennonite Central Committee.

Rebecca Littman, '94, Greenville, N.C., is music librarian at East Carolina Univ.

Michelle Maier, '94, Falls Church, Va., is starting work on her master's of science in personnel development while employed at the American College of Radiology.

Mary Myers, '94, San Diego, Calif., is a process engineer for a capacitor manufacturing company in San Diego, Presidio Components. She plans to marry Hung Trinh next summer.

Carole Rummerfield, '94, New Braunfels, Texas, is pursuing a second bachelor's degree in nursing and expects to graduate in May from the Univ. of Texas School of Nursing in San Antonio.

Keith Sato, '94, Kaneohe, Hawaii, is a management trainer for the Bank of Hawaii in the area of commercial lending. He served for three months as an executive for the 1994 Aloha United Way campaign.

Kathi Ainsworth-Jones, '95, Brier, is research director for the marketing department of NW Cable Advertising and Prime Sports NW.

Chris McLain, '95, Portland, Ore., received the Dr. Walter F. Hiltner Memorial Award from the UW Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics for his creativity, scholarship and leadership. Hiltner, a Boeing space scientist who died in 1966, graduated from the UW in 1934 and was a member of the engineering faculty in the 1940s.
