FACULTY AND FRIENDS

Medicine Professor Edwin Bierman died July 5, 1995, after serving the UW since 1962. A nationally recognized researcher on cholesterol and heart disease, he was the first director of the UW's Northwest Lipid Research Clinic and was best known for his research on how fats are processed in the body. He stepped down in 1994 after 18 years at the UW. He was 64 when he died after a long struggle with bone cancer.

Business Professor Emeritus Edward G. Brown died July 20, 1995, after serving the UW since 1949. Born in Spokane, he received his undergraduate degree from the UW in 1929 and his M.B.A. from Harvard in 1932. He retired in 1972. He was 89.

Chemistry Professor Emeritus David F. Eggers died Aug. 12, 1995, after serving the UW since 1950. He retired in 1990.

History Professor Emeritus Donald E. Emerson died Sept. 8, 1995, after serving the UW since 1946. Born in Chippewa Falls, Wis., he became fascinated with history after serving as an intelligence officer during World War II, interrogating German prisoners. He specialized in 20th century Europe, especially Germany, and was known as a demanding, relentless professor who always wore the same gray, pinstriped suit to class. He retired from the UW in 1988 after teaching for 42 years. He was 78.

Carrie W. Garrison, a longtime supporter of the UW even though she didn't attend school here, died June 21, 1995. She set up a fund for psychological counseling at the UW law school through the Campaign for Washington and was helpful in finding people and getting them back in touch with the University. The mother of Bruce Garrison, '78, who heads the New York UWAA geographic club, she was 77 when she died in Ossining, N.Y.

Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Professor Marla Hooks died July 9, 1995, after serving the UW since 1991. A native of Hinsdale, Ill., she worked with some of Seattle's most troubled young people at the Juvenile Detention Ctr., the Odessa Brown Clinic, Harborview and Children's. She received her M.D. in psychiatry from Northwestern. She was 40 when she died in a car accident.

Sociology Professor James C. McCann died in July 1995, after serving the UW since 1969. Born in Medford, Mass., he received graduate degrees from the Univ. of Connecticut and Brown, and joined the UW in 1969. He specialized in social statistics and population studies. He was 55.

Radiology Professor Laurence A. Mack died June 15, 1995, after serving the UW since 1978. He was the director of diagnostic ultrasound at the UW Medical Ctr. The Society of Radiologist in Ultrasound established a research prize to honor his achievements in the field. He was 50.

Forestry Professor Emeritus J.C.H. Robertson died Sept. 2, 1995, after serving the UW since 1945. Nicknamed "Scotty," he was born in England and served in the British Royal Engineers in World War I before coming to the U.S. He taught forest management and photogrammetry. He got his B.S. from the UW in 1927, and got graduate degrees from the Univ. of California, Berkeley, and Duke. He retired from the UW in 1969. He was 99.

Former Forestry Professor George R. Staebler died June 21, 1995. A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Univ. of Michigan. He taught at the UW in 1954 and 1955 before joining Weyerhaeuser, later becoming director of forest research. He was 78.

Law Professor Emeritus Warren Shattuck died June 27, 1995, after serving the UW since 1935. A Louisiana native, he came to law school at the UW and graduated No. 1 in his class in 1933. A respected faculty member known for his intimidating ways, he taught contract law. After he retired in 1973, he moved to California and later joined the faculty at the Hastings College of Law. He was 86.
