    Faculty & Friends

    Professor Emeritus of Zoology W. Thomas Edmondson died Jan. 11. He joined the UW faculty in 1949. A zoologist specializing in fresh-water biology, his research was responsible for the cleanup of Lake Washington and the creation of Metro in the mid-1950s. He retired in 1986. He was 83.

    J. Wilfred Gallagher, a member of the original periodontics faculty at the School of Dentistry, died March 1 of pneumonia. A native of Vancouver, B.C., He moved to Seattle in 1949 and joined the UW dental faculty. He taught on and off at the UW, later taught in North Carolina before returning to Seattle to enter private practice. He was 90.

    Orthopaedics Professor Douglas Harryman II died Dec. 24. Born on Dec. 24, 1953 in Baltimore, he was a graduate of Virginia Tech and the Medical College of Virginia. After serving in the Air Force, he joined the UW orthopaedics faculty, and had a special interest in shoulder and elbow surgery and research. He was 46.

    Laurel Jones Lewis, professor emeritus of electrical engineering, died on Feb. 26. Born on Nov. 29, 1911, the Stanford-educated engineer joined the UW faculty in 1946. In addition to his teaching and research, he served as chair of the Faculty Sentate. He was 88.

    Professor Emeritus Michael Rothenberg of Pediatrics and Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences died Jan 16. Born on Jan. 4, 1927 in Boston, he joined the UW in 1967 and spent two decades on the faculty, retiring in 1987. He was 73.

    John Schilling, professor emeritus of surgery, died Nov. 29. Born on Nov. 5, 1917 in Kansas City, Mo., he joined the UW in 1974 and went on to spend eight years as chairman of the surgery department in the UW School of Medicine. He retired in 1988. He was 82.

    Professor Emeritus of Microbiology Russell Weiser, '34, died Dec. 31 after serving the UW for 43 years. One of the founders of the UW School of Medicine, he saw the need for a state medical school following WWII. He also set up an annual lectureship at the medical school that is still held today focusing on his specialty, immunology. He was 93.

    Associate Professor Weston Wilsing, '59, of the School of Business died Jan. 5. Born on June 4, 1921 in Sheboygan, Wis., he joined the UW in 1953 as a predoctoral associate in business and taught on the business faculty until his retirement in 1983. He was 78.
