A new look for the Husky debuted April 18 as UW Intercollegiate Athletics announced a new identity program that incorporates one standard for colors and design across all varsity sports. While the UW's block "W" mark had only subtle changes, the secondary Husky graphic had a total makeover. "It is a very, very strong image that captures the essences of a Husky," says Athletics Director Barbara Hedges. The redesign took 15 months and was done by Nike Team Sports. Left to right are three versions of the Husky, a 1983 full face caracature of a "happy" Husky, a 1995 rendering based on a prize-winning show dog, and the 2001 stylized graphic.
With senior Megan Franza (left) leading the way, the UW women's basketball team surprised just about everybody in recording one of its best seasons. Despite being picked to finish in the bottom half of the Pac-10 Conference, the Huskies went 22-10, won a share of the Pac-10 title and made it to the NCAA tournament. There, the sixth-seeded Huskies knocked off perennial power Old Dominion and upset Florida and Oklahoma, making it to the "Elite Eight," where they fell to Southwest Missouri State 104-87. It was only the second time the Huskies had made it that far in the NCAAs. Franza, meanwhile, averaged 16.1 points this season and scored 12 points against Southwest Missouri State to end her career ranked sixth on the Husky career scoring list. Photo by Alan Hubbard.
The UW's contemporary music station KCMU now has new call letters and a new studio. On March 30 it became KEXP and moved from Kane Hall into KZOK's former studio on Dexter Avenue N. The station is now a joint venture between the UW and the Experience Music Project (EMP). The UW remains the license holder for the independent radio station, which first broadcast in 1972. The EMP provides free studio space and the Allen Foundation for Music has pledged up to $600,000 over the next four years.
The UW Summer Arts Festival is entering its second year with the theme "Pangaea" (referring to the time when the Earth was one land mass). The UW College of Arts and Sciences Schools of Art, Drama, Music and Dance will hold a week of performances, exhibits and workshops by faculty, students and internationally renowned artists July 17-22 on the UW campus. At right is Rebecca Enghauser of the UW Chamber Dance Company in a performance of Ted Shawn's "Mevlevi Dervish."
