Curtis Williams 1978-2002
Former Husky football player Curtis Williams, who was paralyzed below the neck after an injury in the 2000 UW-Stanford game, died of natural causes May 6 at the home of his brother in Fresno, Calif. It is the first death of a student-athlete in UW history due to a sports-related injury.
Former Player Romar Returns to Coach Basketball
Former Husky basketball star Lorenzo Roma was hired April 4 as the new men's basketball coach at the University of Washington. Romar, 43, who coached at Saint Louis University for the past three seasons, replaces Bob Bender, who stepped down March 19 after nine up-and-down seasons.

Seattle ARCS Receives UW Award for Graduate Student Support
For Marcela Gonzales, the looming question wasn't if she would get in to graduate school but where she would go to graduate school. Financial support was a key factor. Gonzales, a graduate student in materials science and engineering, chose the University of Washington over the University of California, Berkeley because UW offered her a fellowship given by the Seattle chapter of ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists).
Bishop Tutu Honored as UW Revives Honorary Degree Program
Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Washington on May 7, the first time the UW has awarded an honorary degree since 1921.
Former Secretary of State Albright to Salute Class of 2002
Madeleine Albright, former U.S. secretary of state and the highest ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government, will be the featured speaker at the 127th University of Washington Commencement ceremonies starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15 in Husky Stadium. At that time she will also receive an honorary doctorate of laws from the UW.
Medical School is Tops in Primary Care; 20 Units Rated in U.S. News Top 10
The University of Washington has the top primary-care medical school in the nation, according to the 2002 U.S. News & World Report annual rankings of graduate programs and professional schools. Best Graduate Schools from U.S. News & World Report also put 20 UW programs and specialties among the top 10 in categories reranked or newly ranked this year.
