    Faculty & Friends

    Irwin S. Blumenfeld, '30, director of news services and journalism instructor from 1947-1974, died March 17. Blumenfeld guided the UW through on-campus communist witch hunts in the 1940s and dealt with the press when Vietnam protests exploded in the '60s and '70s. After graduating from the UW in 1930 with degrees in journalism and economics, the 22-year-old cub reporter acquired two weekly newspapers in Snohomish and Whatcom counties. He sold both publications in 1942 after becoming the first member of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association to enlist during World War II. He won a Bronze Star for his service with the Fifth Army in Italy. Blumenfeld worked briefly for both the Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer before taking the position as chief spokesman for the UW. He was 93.

    Emily Harris, who was on the faculty of the UW School of Social Work from 1935-39, died March 19. She was 102.
