    Donald R. Baldwin, '60, former director of the UW's Office of Technology Transfer, died Feb. 14. He spent 37 years at the UW and was assistant provost of research before his appointment to head up the technology transfer office in 1983. In that role, he oversaw the transfer of useful ideas and products from the UW's research labs to the private sector and helped bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars through the patenting and licensing of technologies. He retired in 1998. He was 64.

    George Bayer, a former Husky lineman who played in the NFL and went on to enjoy a successful professional golf career, died March 16. He played football for the Huskies from 1946-49 after returning from the Navy in World War II. After a short NFL career, he played on the PGA Tour, winning the 1957 Canadian Open, the 1958 Mayfair Inn Open and the 1960 St. Petersburg Open. He later played on the Senior Tour. He was 77.

    John Philip Bourque, professor emeritus of finance and business economics, died Dec. 28, 2002. He taught at the UW from 1957 until his retirement in 1992. He was 80.

    English Professor Alan Fisher died March 31. He joined the UW faculty in 1968 after completing his undergraduate and graduate work at UC-Berkeley. He held joint appointments in English and comparative literature since 1996. Fisher, who specialized in the history and heritage of humanism from the Renaissance to the present, underwent heart bypass surgery last year. He was 63.

    V. Standish Mallory, professor emeritus of geological sciences, died Feb. 15. The New Jersey native joined the UW faculty in 1952 and taught until his retirement in 1984. He also served 22 years as curator in invertebrate paleontology at the Burke Museum. He was 83.

    Robert P. Mayo, '37, '38, who served as the first budget director for President Richard Nixon, died Jan. 25. A Phi Beta Kappa student at the UW, he worked for the Washington State Tax Commission and as a bank executive before his appointment as Nixon's budget director in 1969. He left the White House in 1970 to become president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. He was 86.

    Merle Lafette Meacham, '56, professor emeritus of education, died Jan. 28. A native of Portland, Ore., he joined the UW faculty in 1955 and taught until his retirement in 1984. He was 82.

    Edmond S. Meany Jr., '29, an accomplished historian and educator, died Jan. 20. Meany's father, Edmond S. Meany Sr., for whom Meany Hall is named, was a beloved historian at the University. After his father's death, Meany, known to his friends as Ned, donated numerous Native American artifacts to the Burke Museum of Natural History and documents to the UW Libraries' Special Collections unit from his father's collections. The Seattle-born Meany graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1925, earned his bachelor's degree from the UW in 1929 and a doctorate in history from Harvard in 1936. He then worked as a research fellow at the Brookings Institute before a stint as an assistant archivist at the National Archives. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II, serving as an educational and district war diary officer. After the war, Meany moved to Massachusetts and headed the history department at a private school. He later became headmaster at Northfield School. He was 95.

    David Robert Scott, professor emeritus of forest resources, died Dec. 11, 2002. A Toronto native, he taught at the UW faculty from 1955 until his retirement in 1988. He also served four years as associate dean of forestry and was chair of the College of Forest Resources' biological sciences division. He was 81.

    George Stenzel, professor emeritus of forest resources, died Feb. 12. A New York City native, he joined the UW faculty in 1949 and taught until his retirement in 1976. He was 92.
