Covering All the Bases: Alumni to Tour Safeco Field

Safeco Field is known nationwide for its sensational yet intimate setting, its glorious views of downtown Seattle and the comfort it provides Mariner fans. One way it keeps fans dry is the retractable roof, which is a signature of the 5-year-old, $517 million stadium, known as one of the best in all of baseball.

You can find out all about the roof and the engineering challenges that went into building it at the Behind the Scenes Engineering Tour of Safeco Field," set for Aug. 21. Jon D. Magnusson, '75, CEO and chairman of Magnusson Klemencic Associates, the company that designed the retractable roof, will lead the tour. The event is put on by the UW Alumni Association in collaboration with the UW College of Engineering as part of its new "Behind the Scenes Engineering" tours.

The tour begins at 10 a.m. at the Mariners Team Store. Following the talk, lunch will be held at the Pyramid Alehouse across the street from the stadium. Cost of the tour and lunch is $20 for UWAA members, $25 general and $10 for children 12 and under. Registration begins on July 7 at
