Together they opened a small grocery store in Beacon Hill before taking over the frozen-food company from Pang's sister, Ruby Chow, in the early 1950s. In the beginning, Pang used her sister's humble kitchen to prepare and package all of the food products by hand. She also taught cooking classes for thousands of students in Seattle's International District, hosted large charity events for local PTAs and published a cookbook, A Wok with Mary Pang, in 1990. Her business never recovered from a 1995 warehouse fire set by her son, which took the lives of four Seattle firefighters.
