1930

Hazel Cain Briggs, '37, St. Augustine, Fla., retired from the U.S. Foreign Service in 1966 after serving as U.S. consul in several countries, including Iceland and Hong Kong. She moved to Florida in 1972 and worked as a travel agent. She is now retired.

Doris Turnure Tonning, '39, Seattle, has been meeting regularly with five other UW alumnae for more than 70 years. In addition to her, the other active members of Beta Gamma Sigma, the economics and business honorary, who meet are Suzanne Scholl Goodge, '24; May Fitzpatrick Freeman, '27; Ellen Clarke Sperry, '30; Evelyn Thostesen Borgersen, '36; and Elizabeth Dearle, '36.

Robert Whitebrook, '39, '52, Lake San Marcos, Calif., received the Washington State Centennial Award for distinguished histories of the Pacific Northwest. His fifth book, Measure of Men, was accepted by Universal Studios for development as a possible motion picture script.

Attention Classes of the '30s

In 1933, the Alumni Association sold copies of a record featuring George Bailey playing the old UW chimes. The reunion committee for the classes of 1944, 1945 and 1946 is trying to locate a copy in connection with their fall reunion. 1940

Ray Clough, '42, Sunriver, Ore., received a National Medal of Science at the White House on Dec. 18, 1994, for developing tools used by engineers to analyze and design structures that can withstand earthquakes. He retired from the Cal-Berkeley College of Engineering in 1987.

Joseph Hasson, '43, Rockville, Md., is a retired professor of economics at George Mason Univ. He has been married for 51 years, and has three children and two grandchildren.

Eugene (Spike) Raymond, '44, Kent, retired from Boeing in 1988 and wrote the book Aircraft Flight Control Actuation System Design.

John Corbally, '47, '50, Mill Creek, received the UW College of Arts and Sciences' Distinguished Achievement Award. He served as the president of Syracuse Univ. and the Univ. of Illinois and was president and director of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. He was named the UWAA's Alumnus Summa Laude Dignatus in 1988.

Robert P. Kraft, '47, '49, Aptos, Calif., received the UW College of Arts and Sciences' Distinguished Achievement Award. He served as director of the Lick Observatory--the nation's oldest mountaintop observatory--for 17 years and was director of the Univ. of California Observatories for three years. He's a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

1950

Guy Harper, '50, Seattle, and several other former rowers have formed a competitive master rowing group called the Ancient Mariners. Among the members are Paul Brown, '43; Rod Johnson, '50; Bill Cameron, '53; Dick Wahlstrom, '53; Dave Pratt, '57; Dale Lonheim, '64; John Baker, '65; Lou Gellerman, '58; Charley McIntyre, '53; Ron Haringa, '66; Fred Raney, '61; Stan Pocock, '47; and Jon Rider, '63, the UWAA's executive director. Marilyn Sellers, '52, '84, Seattle, is a King County Superior Court judge. She took office in January 1993.

Robert Brine, '56, '57, Mill Creek, has been selected national president of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America. He is a Seattle businessman.

Robert Vieira, '56, Kailua, Hawaii, and his wife, Carol, announce the arrival of daughter Kimberly Carol on July 19, 1993. He is materials manager of the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific.

Stan Pasin, '58, Issaquah, retired last year after 37 years with the U.S. Forest Service. He works part time for the City of Seattle at the Cedar River Watershed and is on the board of directors of the environmental organization "10 Million Salmon."

1960

George Shine, '60, Springfield, Ore., recently retired from teaching college. He was president of the UW chapters of both Chi Phi fraternity and Alpha Kappa Psi and is trying to contact members of either organization from that time.

Anita Roy Johnson, '61, San Diego, Calif., is the reinsurance accountant for the Insurance Co. of the West. She has been with that firm for 15 years.

Thomas Faragher, '63, Napa, Calif., left Truckee River Bank to open up a consulting practice. He works with banks on Small Business Administration lending, strategic planning, executive search and credit review.

Susan Byington, '65, Seattle, is the vice president of human resources for the Sisters of Providence Health System.

Joseph Monks, '65, '67, Spokane, was named the 1994 Washington Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. He is a professor of operations management at Gonzaga Univ. and author of Operations Management: Theory and Problems, a textbook translated into several languages and used by more than 250 colleges and universities. He is also the director of Adopt-a-Family, a program he started in 1985 for the Mayan Indians in Guatemala. The program helps families and communities obtain training and resources to become self-sufficient.

Mavis Amundson, '67, Auburn, edited the book Sturdy Folk, published by Western Gull Publishing. The book is a collection of personal accounts written by older residents of the Olympic Peninsula.

Charles Schluter, '67, Seattle, is vice president, national accounts, for Aetna Health Plans, serving the Pacific Northwest and Alaska region. He has been with Aetna for 28 years.

Capt. Gary L. Brown, '68, '71, Seattle, retired from active duty after 26 years of service with the Navy. His last assignment was with the Naval Reserve Readiness Command in Seattle.

Carol Gabriel Woodward, '69, Cottage Grove, Minn., is a children's librarian at the Southdale Area Library in suburban Minneapolis.

Ken Kaivo, '70, Montesano, manages Campbell Electric in Aberdeen. He has four children.

Gaylord Reagan, '70, '71, Bellevue, Neb., is the site coordinator for Central Michigan Univ.'s continuing education program at Offutt Air Force Base, where he also teaches graduate-level management courses. He also teaches at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Carol Anita Ryan, '70, Seattle, planned to leave in April for a sailing trip around the world. Her first leg was from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to the Marquisas in the South Pacific.

Charles Angell, '72, Seattle, recently returned to Seattle after 7 1/2 years in the South and Southeast Asia. He is now developing aquaculture businesses in Mexico.

Cmdr. Michael Daling, '72, New York City, retired from the Navy after 22 years of service, most recently at the Trident facility in Silverdale.

C.J. Wyckoff, '72, '77, Issaquah, had her novel Glass Ceiling published in March.

Joanne Goodwin, '73, Las Vegas, Nev., received an American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship for 1995-96, and a National Endowment for the Humanities summer research stipend. Both grants will support research for her manuscript, Gender and the Politics of Welfare Reform. She received her Ph.D. from the Univ. of Michigan in 1991 and is an assistant professor at the Univ. of Nevada, Las Vegas.

John Moring, '73, Bangor, Me., had his book Arthur Hill: Western Actor, Miner, and Law Officer published by Sunflower Univ. Press of Kansas.

Richard T. Kennedy, '76, Des Moines, Wash., and his wife, Heidi Morgan, '77, announce the birth of their daughter, Marianna, on Feb. 24, 1995. He is the mayor of Des Moines.

Lana Abbey, '76, Las Vegas, Nev., runs a desktop publishing firm, Paradise Valley Publications. Her firm specializes in books and brochures relating to Hawaii.

Che-Ho Wei, '76, Hsin Chu, Taiwan, is a professor and the dean of research and development at the National Chiao Tung Univ.

Frederick Kesich, '77, Rancho Murieta, Calif., is vice president of the PAC Machine Co. He and his wife, Robin Albee-Kesich, '84, have two sons, Anthony, 8, and Stephen, 5.

Mark Nelson, '77, Austin, Texas, was named communications chair of the International Customer Service Assoc. at its annual conference in San Francisco. He is director of customer service for McCaw Cellular Communications.

Armi Lesaca Stephenson, '77, Issaquah, is an industrial engineer for Boeing. She and her husband, Mark, have three sons: Oliver, 15; Michael, 10; and Nathan, 2.

Jeffrey Thomas, '79, Seattle, is the owner of Second Glance Films. He is working on a documentary on Soviet filmmaking during the 1960s and 1970s called The System.

Mike Isaacson, '80, Seattle, has formed Pinpoint Direct Marketing Management. He formerly was director of marketing for Sierra On-Line and director of retail promotions for Nike, Inc.

Randy Livingston, '80, Morro Bay, Calif., is the power plant manager of PG&E's Morro Bay Power Plant.

Eric Tosaya, '80, '82, Fremont, Calif., is manager of operations at NexGen Inc. He and his wife, Theresa, have a son, Trevor, 3, and a daughter, Emma, 15 months.

Mark Brusich, '81, Alexandria, Va., planned a May 5 wedding to Stephanie Belle Phillips, an Air Force officer.

Anthony Petrarca, '81, Seattle, was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1989. He is working as a Catholic chaplain at the UW Newman Center.

Sarah Thompson, '81, Seattle, had a show of paintings in January at Metropolis Contemporary Art Gallery in Seattle.

Dennis Brooke, '83, Auburn, is the new product development manager for Kent-based Base-Line Inc., an international supplier of graphic arts products.

Karen Bruce, '83, Berryton, Kan., is a family physician and the assistant director of the family medicine residency program of Topeka. She also is a rancher.

Bruce Fulton, '83, Seattle, received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship for translating a collection of short stories by O Chong-hui from Korean into English.

Chuck Henager Jr. `83, Kennewick, is a staff scientist on ceramic composites research at Battelle Pacific NW Labs.

Robert Wick, '83, Wenatchee, is a quality control supervisor for Senica Foods Corp. in Othello.

Michael V. Ward, '84, '94, Seattle, is working in the Seattle area as a civil engineer.

Patsy Riley, '86, Seattle, is a creative service manager at Microsoft. She planned to marry Stephen Brown on May 27.

Michael Dahlberg, '86, Auke Bay, Alaska, is the director of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Juneau, Alaska.

Michael Rogers, '86, Seattle, is a shareholder in the Reed McClure law firm in Seattle. He specializes in insurance coverage, appellate and commercial litigation.

Carrie York, D.D.S., '86, '91, Mercer Island, has a dental practice on First Hill. She is also a member of the UW School of Dentistry's Dept. of Prosthodontics.

Lisa Ann Marsh, '87, Olympia, graduated cum laude and was valedictorian of the first graduating class of the Seattle Univ. School of Law in December 1994.

Rene Sanchez, '87, Landstuhl, Germany, is director of a public health department in a military hospital.

Kirsten Barthel Trusko, '87, Castro Valley, Calif., is pursuing an M.B.A. while working as regional sales manager for the credit card division of a major bank.

Tim Dugaw, '88, Secane, Pa., is an I.V. therapy sales representative for Active Medical, Inc.

Doug Ing, '88, Seattle, screened his film Masked Man at Elliott Bay Book Co. on Jan. 6 to a crowd of more than 100 people.

Michael Melugin, '88, Delafield, Wis., is an assistant professor of surgery in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Steve Pollinger, '88, Edina, Minn., handles intellectual property litigation for the Minneapolis law firm of Merchant Gould Smith Edell Welter & Schmidt.

Cheryl Ann Takabayashi, '88, Honolulu, Hawaii, married Richard E. Dunn Jr. in November. She graduated from the Santa Clara Univ. School of Law in 1991 and is an attorney with the Hawaii Carpenters' Union.

Eric Burdge, '89, Kirkland, was one of 34 participants in the 1994 Fellowship Program in Academic Medicine for Minority Students. He is a senior at Cornell Univ. Medical College and is researching the structure and function of cardiac valves.

Anya Rogers, '89, Bellevue, was honored for her high production level and outstanding customer service at the Security Mutual Life Convention. She is a Seattle associate for Security Mutual Life.

Eric Walvoord, '89, Seattle, is operations training manager for Seattle-based Shurgard Storage Centers, Inc.

Laurie Wetzel Hayward, '90, Vacallo, Switzerland, is a professional volleyball player for Bellinzona, a League A team in Switzerland.

Shannon Ludwig, '91, Lincoln, Neb., completed her master's in sports psychology at John F. Kennedy Univ. in Orinda, Calif. She now is an athletic counselor for members of the football and men's basketball team at the Univ. of Nebraska.

Michael Meyer, '91, Vacallo, Switzerland, is a professional basketball player for SAV Vacallo, a League B team in Switzerland.

Kimberly Piper, '91, Salt Lake City, Utah, graduated from the Univ. of Utah law school in 1994. She is a single parent of a young son.

Michelle Balkenhol, '92, Ridgefield, married David Shroyer, '90, on Aug. 13, 1994.

Kimberly Hamilton, '92, Lynnwood, works in personnel for the Fishing Co. of Alaska, Inc. She is going to marry Vincent Dreistadt on June 24.

Seema Sanjay Jejurikar, '92, Redmond, has two daughters. Her husband works at Microsoft. In 1992, she worked at the primate center on AIDS vaccine trials. She is currently teaching biology at Bellevue Comm. College.

Andy Lewis, '92, Ann Arbor, Mich., is in his first year of dental school at the Univ. of Michigan. He is doing research on the frequency of cartoid artery calcifications imaged on panoramic radiographs.

Roger Rose, '92, Arnold, Md., was promoted to the rank of commander and reported for duty at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Louis Figueroa, '93, Seattle, is a project engineer for Harris Mechanical Contracting. His current project is remodeling Metro's Renton wastewater treatment plant.

Leslie Kaye, '93, Seattle, is doing voice over work on "The Women's Leadership Project Video." She works at Emerald Productions Inc. in Seattle.
