FACULTY AND FRIENDS

Civil Engineering Professor Sunirmal Banerjee died Jan. 24, 1996, after serving the UW since 1981. He was 50.

International Studies Professor Emeritus Imre Boba died Jan. 11, 1996, after serving the UW since 1962. Born in Gyor, Hungary, during World War II he served in the Polish resistance movement in Hungary, for which he was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit by the free Polish government. He was a researcher with Radio Free Europe before coming to UW, where he got his Ph.D. in history in 1962. He taught in the history department and Jackson School for 28 years. He retired in 1990. He was 76.

Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Science Robert Glenn Benedict died Nov. 19, 1995, after serving the UW for 35 years. He did research on the bacteriology of the diseases. He retired in 1976. He was 84.

Mechanical Engineering Professor Emeritus Morris Elsmere Childs died Jan. 2, 1996, after serving the UW since 1954. He conducted research on two-dimensional turbulent mixing between parallel incompressible jets. He retired in 1986. He was 73.

Associate Professor of Asian Languages and Literature Alan W. Entwhistle died March 28, 1996, after serving the UW since 1986. A native of Weymouth, England, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Southampton and his master's and doctorate from the University of London. He was 47 when he died of cancer.

Mechanical Engineering Professor Emeritus Blake Mills Jr. died Dec. 29, 1995, after serving the UW since 1946. Known as an excellent teacher with a passion for learning, Mills earned an undergraduate degree at the UW before getting a master's at MIT and another master's from the UW. During World War II, he helped design weapons as a member of the Navy Reserve. His research specialty was the effects of vibration upon sliding friction. He retired in 1977. He was 83.

Arboretum Director Emeritus Brian O. Mulligan died Jan. 4, 1996, after serving the UW since 1946. Born in Northern Ireland, Mulligan came to Seattle in 1946 to take over the arboretum. Mulligan and his staff developed the collections and displays so creatively that it ranks among the top three "living museums" of woody plants in the U.S. He retired in 1972. He was 88.

Anthropology Professor Emeritus Kenneth Eyre Read died Nov. 13, 1995, after serving the UW since 1956. Born in Sydney, Australia, he joined the UW in 1956 and retired in 1983. He was 77.

Kinesiology Associate Professor Emeritus Leone Helmich Rulifson died Dec. 22, 1995, after serving the UW for an astonishing 72 years. Born in 1900 in Minnesota, she came out west and earned a bachelor's and master's degree from the UW. She joined the UW in 1923 as an assistant in physical education for women. She taught until 1966. She was 95.

Communications Professor Emeritus Henry Ladd Smith died Dec. 9, 1995, after serving the UW since 1955. Born in Cleveland in 1906, he went on to earn degrees from Yale and the Univ. of Wisconsin. He served as director of the School of Communications and retired in 1972. He was 89.

Music Professor Emeritus Miriam Terry died March 4, 1996, after serving the UW since 1930. The Seattle native studied piano as a girl, took a year of private lessons in Boston and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music from the UW. She served as head of music at Central Washington Univ. before joining the UW to teach music theory and history, early music literature and choral conducting. She retired in 1975. She was 90.
