FACULTY AND FRIENDS

Ernestine Elizabeth Collins, a Panhellenic adviser for the UW for 18 years, died in Jan. 13, 1997, after a 16-year battle with cancer. A native of Sumas, she was a graduate of Lincoln High School and received a bachelor's degree from the UW in 1949. Before going to work for the Panhellenic Assoc., she was an elementary school teacher in Bellevue. She was 75.

Law Professor Emeritus Charles Edward Corker died March 9, 1997, after serving the UW since 1965. Born Jan. 16, 1917 in Boise, Idaho, he received his undergraduate degree from Stanford and his law degree from Harvard. After serving as assistant attorney general for California and on the faculty of Stanford's law school, he joined the UW law school faculty in 1965. He taught until his retirement in 1987. He was 80.

Art Professor Emeritus John Wilber Erickson died March 1, 1997, after serving the UW since 1956. A native of Galesburg, Ill., he received three degrees from the Univ. of Illinois and joined the UW in 1956. He retired in 1982. He was 77.

Continuing Education Dean Emeritus Lloyd William Schram died Feb. 12, 1997, after serving the UW since 1940. Born in Ray, N.D., in 1912, he earned three degrees at the UW and another at Harvard. He joined the UW faculty in 1940 as a research associate in the Bureau of Government Research. He retired and became dean emeritus in 1975. He was 84.

Public Affairs Research Associate Professor Cyrus Ulberg died April 1, 1997. An expert in transportation policy and community development, he conducted some of the earliest and most influential research on the cost-effectiveness of carpool lanes. He was 53 when he died of a heart attack while swimming at the Hec Edmundson Pavilion pool.

Romance Languages and Literature Professor Emeritus Clotilde Marconnier Wilson died Jan. 18, 1997, after serving the UW since 1929. A lifelong resident of Seattle, she earned three degrees from the UW and taught French at the UW beginning in 1929. She retired in 1976. She was 90.

Library Accountant Rose Wilson died Jan. 5, 1997, when she and her family were murdered in Bellevue. A UW employee for 10 years, she spent the past two years as the library liaison for a trial method of downloading invoices for purchasing serials and books for the libraries. The mother of two daughters with birth defects, she was known as a hard worker who lived life to the fullest. Two Bellevue teen-age boys were arrested and charged with the murder of Wilson; her husband, William; and her daughters; Julia and Kim.

English Associate Professor Emeritus Elinore May Yaggy died July 1, 1996, after serving the UW since 1943. The native of Waterloo, Iowa, Yaggy helped many TAs learn the basics of university teaching at a time when little formal training existed. Her manual, How to Write Your Term Paper, is still in use today. She received undergraduate and master's degrees from the Univ. of Idaho and her Ph.D. from the UW. She joined the UW in 1943 and retired in 1977. She was 89.
