Seattle Post-Intelligencer Cartoonist David Horsey won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartoons, the Pulitzer committee announced April 12. Horsey, a former editor of the Daily, submitted 20 cartoons, many of them lampooning the Clinton sex scandal. The prize-winning cartoonist says he got his start in the 1970s drawing "rude caricatures" of an instructor in his UW weight-training class. "He didn't get mad like I expected him to. Instead, he said that I ought to work for the UW Daily." Work by the nationally syndicated cartoonist appears in more than 450 newspapers.
One of the oldest living things on the grounds of Mount Vernon has contributed to some of the newest living things on the UW campus. Two cuttings from a holly tree growing on George Washington's Virgina plantation now grow next to Parrington Hall in memory of Washington's death 200 years ago. Number of "hits" to the UW Web site recorded in May 1998, according to a Web rating company, Media Metrix, which ranked the most highly visited U.S. university Web sites. The uW ranked fourth among universities, trailing only MIT, Illinois, and Michigan.
To recognize the lifelong contribution of Technical Communication Professor Myron "Mike" White, '43, '58, alumnus James Prekeges, '84, has established a $15,000 matching challenge grant for the new Myron L. White Endowment Fund. Prekeges, who (recently?) retired from Microsoft, will match all individual donations up to $15,000 made by Aug. 1. The endowment will enhance the education of technical communication students at the University. It is named in honor of White, who served on the UW faculty from 1959 to 1993 and was the director of the UW's interdisciplinary degree programs in technical communication.
