PEMCO, UWAA Celebrate 10 Years of Commitment to Education

For 10 years, thousands of UW alumni have enjoyed fascinating lectures by History Professor Emeritus Jon Bridgman, learned about opera, or picked up tips from travel expert Rick Steves, '78, through the UW Alumni Association Lecture Series. These participants can thank PEMCO Financial Services for helping make it all possible.

Founded in 1936 by the late Robert J. Handy, '25, Seattle-based PEMCO has long been committed to education. Its 10-year sponsorship of the UWAA Lecture Series is one example of this commitment.

PEMCO sponsored three series of lectures during 1998-99: Steves' fall travel and art history primer, which drew more than 100 people; Bridgman's winter lectures on the world at mid-century, which was sold out; and a spring lecture series on the challenges we face in the next millennium. The latter featured UW professors George Bridges, Charles Nelson and Allen Glenn, and Seattle Mayor Paul Schell.

PEMCO Financial Services is a family of companies: EvergreenBank, Washington School Employees Credit Union, PEMCO Insurance Companies, PEMCO Corporation, and PEMCO Insurance Agency.

PEMCO started sponsoring the UWAA Lecture Series in 1989, and the response has been so overwhelming the company remains one of the alumni association's strongest supporters to this day.

"We think all corporations have a responsibility to improve the quality of life in the communities where they do business," says President Stan McNaughton. "Companies can do so by supporting charities that benefit disadvantaged people and other worthwhile causes."

"With PEMCO's support, it is possible to provide lifelong learning opportunities, such as the lecture series, for alumni and friends of the University," says UWAA Executive Director David Fagerlie, '81. "Thank you for 10 years of support for this program."
