    Faculty & Friends

    Bernard R. Fink, former director of anesthesia research at the UW, died Oct. 30. He joined the UW in 1964 as professor of anesthesiology and specialized in helping design breathing tubes for anesthetic procedures. A former president of the Anesthesia History Assoc., he retired in 1984. He was 86.

    James R. Hooley, former professor and assistant dean of the UW School of Dentistry, died Oct. 23. He joined the UW in 1963 as an instructor in oral surgery and by 1968 was assistant dean. The author of Hospital Dentistry, he left the UW in 1981 to become dean of the UCLA School of Dentistry, a post he held until 1986. He was 67.

    Robert B. Loper, professor emeritus of drama, died July 7. After a year as a visiting drama professor, he became a full-time drama professor in 1968 and taught until his retirement in 1990. He was 75.

    Geraldine M. Shelvin, who taught physical medicine and rehabilitation at the UW from 1959-67, died June 10. In 1965 she became assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation and remained on the faculty until 1967. She was 78.

    Chemistry Professor Leon Slutsky died Oct. 31 after serving the UW since 1961. A native of New York City, he earned degrees from Cornell Univ. and MIT and joined the UW faculty in 1961. He was 68.

    Peggy Watson, '74, the longtime administrative assistant to Husky football coaches Don James and Jim Lambright, died Dec. 29 after a bout with cancer. Husky Coach Rick Neuheisel visited her in a Bellevue hospice before the Rose Bowl and asked her to call the first play the Huskies would run in the Rose Bowl game against Purdue. The play, a veer option, was dubbed "Peg Left," in memory of Watson, who worked in the athletic department for more than a decade. She was 52.
