Cherishing The Cherries

The famous cherry trees on the Quad will bloom in a few weeks. But behind the scenes, the Class of 1959 has been working to make sure the trees continue to dazzle generations to come. The class, which has been raising money to replace the trees as they die off, has raised $60,000 to date, and needs to come up with an additional $30,000 to reach its goal. This fall, a batch of baby cherry trees will be planted in a demonstration garden at the Center for Urban Horticulture. They will be grafted with stock from the current Quad trees to ensure that they bloom at the same time and with the same color everyone has come to know and love. The Class of 1959 is also planning a 45th reunion for Homecoming week 2004 to celebrate the end of its fund-raising campaign for the new trees. If you would like to contribute to the Class of 1959 Cherry Tree Project, make out your check to the UW Foundation and mail it c/o Dixie Porter, 1415 N.E. 45th Street, Seattle, WA 98105.
