Free Science Lectures Explore New Frontiers

Top researchers from the University of Washington will share exciting new developments in science and technology in "Exploring Our World: Discovering New Froniters" the 2004 UW Science Forum series.

The free, public lectures will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays in April and May in 130 Kane Hall. The series is presented by: the UW Alumni Association, College of Arts and Sciences, Office of Research, College of Engineering, School of Medicine, College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences, and School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

On the program is Biochemistry Professor Alan Weiner, who will discuss biological nanotechnology, the phenomenal feat of engineering that is solved within every cell in our bodies. The series also features Medical History and Ethics Professor Wylie Burke, whose research addresses the social, ethical and policy implications of genetic information. Her recent work includes studies of genetic counseling related to inherited risk for breast cancer, ethical and policy implications of genetic testing, and genetics education for primary care providers.

The lectures are part of the UW Alumni Association goal to offer lifelong learning opportunities to alumni.

April 20: "Insights From Penguins on Environmental Variation," by Dee Boersma, professor biology and adjunct professor of women studies

April 27: "Biology is Nanotechnology: How Our Cells Write, Read, Copy and Store Genetic Information," by Alan Weiner, professor and chair of biochemistry.

May 4: "Genomic Health Care: Promises and Challenges," by Wylie Burke, professor and chair, medical history and ethics and adjunct professor of epidemiology.
