FACULTY AND FRIENDS

George Henry Bartell Jr., '53, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died Jan. 21 at the age of 92. He served as chairman of the Bartell Drug Co. for 34 years.

Tara Dee Blair, '79, '82, of Tacoma, died Oct. 6 at age 54. She served as a policy analyst at the governor's Office of Indian Affairs, a program administrator for the state of Washington and an assistant attorney general.

Rodney Allison Brown, '52, of Seattle, an anesthesiologist who helped improve emergency medical care in Thurston County, died Sept. 24. For 10 years, he served as the medical director of Medic One and trained the organization's first 12 paramedics. He also organized and helped raise funds for the St. Peter Hospital School of Nurse Anesthetists. He was 83.

John B. Coombs, '67, associate vice president for medical affairs and vice dean for regional affairs, died in his Seattle home on Jan. 18. He was 63. For the past 15 years, under Coombs' leadership, the UW has been nationally recognized for its excellence in improving health care for medically undeserved and rural populations. Coombs established the Obstetrical Access Clinic in Tacoma, a development that helped lower Pierce County's infant mortality rate, and founded the Pediatric Sexual Abuse Clinic at Mary Bridge's Children's Hospital. Coombs received a bachelor's degree in zoology from the UW and an M.D. from the Cornell University School of Medicine.

Charles Albert Evans, professor and first chairman of the department of microbiology, of Seattle, died Dec. 4 at age 96. Evans devoted 36 years to the University, during which he served as chairman of the University Senate, associate director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and as the first director of the Office of Minority Student Affairs. He was the last surviving department chair of the original medical school faculty.

Vi Hilbert, an Upper Skagit Tribe elder who spent most of her adult life researching, documenting and translating the Lushootseed language, died Dec. 19. She taught a Salish language class at the UW and founded the Lushootseed Research Center in Seattle. Hilbert was named a Washington State Living Treasure in 1989 and received a National Heritage Fellowship from President Bill Clinton in 1994. She was the subject of a 1995 documentary, "Traditions of the Heart," and the recipient of an honorary doctorate from the UW. She was 90.

Lyle H. Jensen, professor emeritus of biological structure, of Seattle, died Oct. 16 at the age of 92. He served the UW for 39 years.

Howard Kirz, clinical associate professor of Health Services, died Aug. 22. He served the University since 1967.

Otto G. Klein, of Polson, Mont., clinical professor emeritus at the UW School of Medicine, died Nov. 27 at the age of 70.

Thomas J. McInerney, '58, professor emeritus of English, of Portsmouth, N.H., died Dec. 13 at the age of 87.

Charley McIntyre, '51, of Seattle, an investment broker and a legendary rower and rowing coach, died Oct. 29. He was 85.

Benjamin C. Moffett, of Redmond, died Oct. 1 at the age of 84. He was a professor of orthodontics at the UW for nearly 30 years.

Alfred Irvin Sheridan, a former clinical instructor at the UW, of Kent, died Sept. 28. He was 92.

Sol Saporta, professor of linguistics, died on Oct. 21. Saporta served on the UW's faculty for 30 years. He was 83.

Richard H. ("Dick") Truly, who sold the Boone-Truly Farm in Bothell so the land could become the home of the UW Bothell and Cascadia Community College campuses, died Jan. 2. Truly and his family were honored for their many contributions at the Sept. 23 Convocation at UW Bothell. He was 88.

Patrick G. Vukich, of Edmonds, died on Oct. 10 at the age of 67. Vukich was one of the founders of the Harry Bridges Endowed Chair at the University of Washington.

Nicholas G. Ward, a professor emeritus in the UW's department of psychiatry, of Seattle, died Oct. 28 at the age of 60. In 1983, he received the University's Distinguished Teaching Award.

Warren Wooster, professor emeritus of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, died on Oct. 29 at the age of 87. He served the University since 1976.

William Wortley, associate professor emeritus of romance languages and literature died on Nov. 2, having served the University since 1965.
