Attention, Classes of 1946 and earlier

The Purple and Gold Society, which was established in 1995 for UW alumni who have already held a 50th anniversary reunion, has grown into a new UWAA club. The steering committee held its first meeting in December and is planning events throughout the year. A newsletter will announce the club's formation and survey the interests of the more than 19,000 alumni who are in these classes. 1930

Ruddick Lawrence, '34, Bronxville, N.Y., recalls one of his favorite accounts as advertising manager of The Washington Alumnus magazine during the Great Depression was a man who ran a small sports shop in the Olympic Hotel--Eddie Bauer.

Eugene A. Wright, '34, Seattle, and his wife, Esther Ladley Wright, '34, celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary last year. Gene is still serving as a judge on the U.S. 9th Circuit Court.

R.M. Roberts, '35, Wilmington, Del., retired from Du Pont 19 years ago.

Robert W. McDonald, '36, Redmond, and his wife, Jo Quigley, '36, visited daughter Mary Jo and son-in-law Gerry Turner in Toronto in August.

1940

Walter B. Williams, '43, Seattle, was honored as the 59th First Citizen by the Seattle-King County Assoc. of Realtors. The group presented the same award to his father in 1945. Williams, a former state senator, is chairman of Continental, Inc.

Gene Baxter, '44, Lithonia, Ga., retired in 1985 from his position of senior scientist at Georgia Pacific, but now does consulting. He holds 20 U.S. patents and keeps busy with his wife, three children, and four grandchildren.

Margaret L. Marshall, '44, Seattle, has embarked on two new careers upon retiring from handling public relations for the Bellevue School Dist. By day, she writes biographies of local persons, privately published books for family and friends. By night, she is a pianist for various social events.

Warren V. Walker, '46, Manhattan, Kan., is a professor emeritus at Kansas State Univ. He has been a cellist in a string quartet for 39 years.

Arthur M. Sorenson, '48, Lake Oswego, Ore., received the Bowl of Hygeia award for outstanding community service by the Oregon State Pharmacists Assoc.

Janet C. Van Kessel, '48, Sonora, Calif., reports that her daughter, Katherine, is doing her four-year OB-GYN residency at the UW.

Bob Seifert, '49, Fort Worth, Texas, is retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone. He was recently elected president of the Texas chapter of the Intl. Graphanalysis Society.

1950

Herbert Ellison, '51, Bellevue, a UW professor of Russian history, received the 1996 World Citizen Award from the World Affairs Council. George Russell, chairman of the Frank Russell Co. in Tacoma, also received the award.

Grant Wither, '53, Bainbridge Island, writes to say he climbed Mt. Rainier and got his Medicare card the same month, last July.

Richard A. Battin, '55, '58, Federal Way, was the Washington State Tree Farmer of the Year for 1996. He is building a home outside Napavine with timber sawn from his one-man sawmill.

Dan P. Danilov, '55, '58, Bellevue, gave a seminar on new U.S. immigration laws for the staff and tour guides at the Statue of Liberty in October. He is a lawyer specializing in immigration and naturalization law.

William H. Fielder, '56, Peachtree City, Ga., and his wife, Marian Miller Fielder, '57, are retired and enjoying living near their son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren in a suburb of Atlanta.

James Plumb, '56, Athens, Ga., moved his business, Green Hill Partnership, to Georgia. He also teaches at the Univ. of Georgia.

George R. "Dick" Follis , '57, Seattle, retired after 43 years at Boeing. He and his wife own and operate Andersen's RV Park "On the Ocean" in Long Beach.

Janis Robins, '57, St. Paul, Minn., received an honorary doctor's degree from the Latvian Academy of Sciences.

Alex Blanton, '58, New York, is a limited partner with Ingalls & Snyder, a New York money manager and brokerage firm.

Richard D. Olson, '58, Central Point, Ore., retired from the Oregon Dept. of Forestry in 1995 and lives on a 10-acre farm with his wife of 44 years, Barbara. They grow Christmas trees and walnuts.

Roy C. Sillence, '59, Seattle, and his wife, Rose, went on two cruises last year to celebrate their retirements.

1960

Jim P. Mendenhall, '61, Seattle, is vice president, sales manager and investment manager for Dain Bosworth's Seattle office.

Alan M. Corwin, '62, Olympia, is vice president of investments for the Olympia office of Dean Witter Reynolds. He also is president of the North Thurston Schools Education Foundation.

Grant R. Jones, '62, Seattle, and his firm Jones & Jones, and Civitas, were chosen to design the new Denver Commons Park.

Harold W. Bernard Jr., '63, Roswell, Ga., is senior meteorologist with the Weather Channel in Atlanta.

John P. Sainsbury, '64, '67, Lynnwood, is on-scene coordinator for hazardous waste sites for the EPA. His daughter, Sarah, graduated from the UW in 1995 and his son, Benjamin, is a 1995 Lynnwood High School grad.

David M. Marriott Sr., '65, Seattle, is the father of two sons, David and Thomas, both UW students. He also is president of Elgin Public Relations.

Harold F. Beard Jr., '66, Portland, Ore., is a member of the Million Dollar Round Table's 1996 Honor Roll. He is a financial representative at the Lewis Agency of the New England, an insurance and investment company.

Hiro Ogawa, '66, Atherton, Calif., and his wife, Betty, '67, are living in the Bay Area after many years in Tokyo, where they were active with the UWAA's Japan club.

Darlene Dahl Jones, '67, Bellevue, is the 1996-97 president of the Women's University Club of Seattle.

James P. Lassoie, '68, '75, Ithaca, N.Y., just finished his 20th year as a professor of forest science at Cornell. He chairs the Dept. of Natural Resources there.

Robert Berkovitz, '69, Mesa, Ariz., is a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

Lynn Hogan, '69, Seattle, is the new executive director of medical affairs development at the UW. She was vice president for development at Whitman College for four years.

Patricia Hubbard, '69, Fall City, had her latest children's book, My Crayons Talk, published by Henry Holt in 1996.

Daniel E. White, '69, Fair Oaks, Calif., has been the headmaster of Sacramento Country Day School for the past seven years. He recently had his book "... so help me, God", which focuses on presidential inaugurations, published by Novia Science Publishers.

1970

John G. Hughes, '70, Herndon, Va., retired as a captain after 26 years with the Navy and now works for Mitre Corp. He and his wife, Arlene, '69, live in Herndon with their daughter, Michelle.

Mike McCann, '70, Everett, proudly notes that his son, Benjamin, who graduated in civil engineering in December, joined him at Dovetail Structures, a small engineering firm in Everett.

Susan E. Walen, '70, Tacoma, is a community mental health nurse at Tacoma Pierce County Health Dept. Her son is a sophomore at the UW.

G. Franklin Elrod, '71, '74, '84, Starkville, Miss., is a professor of special education at Mississippi State Univ. He and his wife, Jennifer, have a 9-year-old daughter, Andrea.

Joyce Johnson, '72, Bellevue, retired from human resources management with the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services and is a student in the UW gerontology/geriatrics program.

Robert Leach, '72, Mukilteo, has been elected to the board of directors of Everett Mutual Savings Bank. He is managing director and investment executive at Dain Bosworth in Everett.

Navy Capt. Robert O. Passmore, '72, Newport, R.I., completed the Reserve Officer Joint Military Operations Course at the Naval War College.

Nancy J. Saari, '72, '76, Alexandria, Va., is deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget for the city of Alexandria, where she oversees a $300 million budget.

Carmen Tsuboi Chan, '73, '76, '81, Newcastle, is principal of John Muir Elementary School in Seattle.

Douglas V. Hutt, '74, Seattle, added Herbert O. Crane & Assoc. as a new client to his firm, Assignment Sales NW, for representation in Washington, Oregon and Idaho markets.

Penny Taylor, '75, Seattle, received the Leadership Role Model Award in the communications division of the Big Sisters of King County. She is regional vice president for TCI Media Services.

Gretchen Freed Loschen, '76, '79, Redmond, announces the birth of a daughter, Heather, on Nov. 10, 1995.

Harry L. Sedies, '76, Seattle, received the 1996 individual award from the Senior Services of Washington for his 20 years of work in the field of aging and long-term care. He is a program manager in the Aging and Adult Services Div. of the Dept. of Social and Health Services.

Vicki Vawecek-Young, '76, Madison, Wis., is the costume shop manager and teaches costume technology for the theater dept. at the Univ. of Wisconsin.

Cmdr. David D. Bigelow, '77, Norfolk, Va., is commanding officer of the USS Hawes.

Gray Carpenter, '77, Golden Valley, Minn., is national public relations and editorial director of the National Council of Phi Mu Fraternity.

David D. Horowitz, '77, '81, Seattle, is publishing Caruso for the Children, a book of poems by longtime UW English Professor William M. Dunlop, this spring.

Eileen O'Neill Odum , '77, Woodinville, serves on the state Board of Community and Technical Colleges. She is regional president of GTE NW.

Lynn E. Bragg, '78, Mercer Island, received the 1996 Bumbershoot award for best children's publication for her book, A River Lost.

Marie Little, '78, Lynnwood, serves on the Historical Recognition Committee for the city of Lynnwood.

Clarence Moriwaki, '78, Portland, Ore., is the public relations manager of the Portland Rose Festival Assoc. He formerly was deputy communications director to Gov. Mike Lowry and worked for several Seattle radio stations.

Gerald R. Robinson, '78, Federal Way, owns and operates United Wholesale Supply, which distributes kitchen cabinets and appliances to builders. It was rated the 13th fastest growing company in Washington by the Puget Sound Trade Journal.

Suzanne Black, '79, Seattle, was named Region 10 secondary level science teacher of the year by the Washington Science Teachers Assoc. She teaches at Inglemoor High School in Bothell.

David L. Bolson, '79, Mercer Island, returned to the Seattle area after 15 years in Phoenix, Houston and Sacramento. He is with Merrill Lynch's Bellevue office.

Greg Fellman, '79, Everett, was promoted to assistant store manager of the JC Penney at Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood. His son, Jeffrey, is 8 and his daughter, Cydney, is 3.

Kathi A. Ketcheson , '79, Portland, Ore., received her Ph.D. in urban studies from Portland State Univ. last June and is a research assistant professor in institutional research and planning there.

Christine Brown-Jones, '79, Yelm, is married, and is manager of Nisqually Valley Golf Course and coach of the Yelm High School golf team.

1980

Cmdr. Lisa Dahlquist Stephen, '80, Santee, Calif., is attending the Univ. of San Diego for her M.S.N. as a family nurse practitioner and is a commander in the Navy Nurse Corps.

Sandra Guy Zimmerman, '80, Glendale, Ariz., is a nuclear engineer at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station. She also plays violin in the Arizona Opera Orchestra.

David J.E. Callaway, '81, New York, is professor and director of the Laboratory of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics at the Picower Inst. for Medical Research and Rockefeller Univ.

Christine Hall, '81, Tacoma, is director of marketing at Northwest Landing in DuPont. She also sings with the Tacoma Master Chorale and Federal Way Chorale.

Margie K. Langley, '81, Alexander, Maine, is director of pharmacy at the Calair Regional Med. Ctr. in Calais, Maine. She, her husband, Chalkie, and her adopted daughter, Krista, live on 100 acres in rural Maine.

Thomas A. Jowett, '82, Warren, Mich., and his wife, Laura, announce the birth of their daughter, Nicole Marie, on Oct. 7. She joins brothers Andrew and Nathaniel.

Kathleen Weber, '82, Bellevue, is senior vice president, investments, for Smith Barney.

Maj. John L. Welinski, '82, Newport, N.C., received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for his work with the Training Squadron 86 in Pensacola, Fla.

Julie A. Wurden, '82, Bellingham, is the financial management supervisor for ARCO Products' Cherry Point refinery.

Jonathan M. Cruse, '83, Everett, returned safely from a mid-career sabbatical--a year of sailing the B.C. and U.S. west coasts--to start a new job with Boeing Commercial Airplane Group.

Paul J. Hoffman, 83, Poway, Calif., is executive officer of the USS Dolphin, the world's deepest diving submarine. He recently received the Naval Commendation Medal for his work at the Naval Academy's Physics Dept.

Christopher M. Strub, '83, Monterey, Calif., and his wife, Gretchen, announce the birth of their second daughter, Sydney Elizabeth, on May 6.

Kim S. Buike, '84, Bonita, Calif., is a commander in the Navy, stationed in San Diego. In April, she will move to the Pacific NW to serve as the executive officer for Naval Station Everett.

Gwendolyn J. Dewey, '84, Puyallup, retired from the Puyallup School Dist. as an administrator to work as a retirement planner selling annuities and other securities.

John F. Harbottle III, '84, Tacoma, founded his own golf course architecture business, John Harbottle Design, in 1991. He was recognized by Golf World in 1994 as one of the country's top young golf architects.

Christopher M. Hordan, '84, Hermosa Beach, Calif., founded C-Wave, a manufacturer's representative company selling electronic equipment to aerospace and communications companies in Southern California.

Jeff Larson, '84, Chicago, is the associate director of alumni services for Illinois State Univ., managing the university's downtown Chicago satellite office. He is the former director of events for the UWAA.

Samuel K. Law, '84, '87, Seattle, returned to Seattle to serve at the Evangelical Chinese Church in Ballard after graduating with a master's of divinity degree from Regent College in Vancouver, B.C. He and his wife, Esther, have a son, Jeremiah.

Gerald P. Linder, '84, Tigard, Ore., is chief legal counsel for the Unified Sewerage Agency of Washington County, Oregon. He and his wife, Karen, have a son, Ryan.

Larry McEdward, '84, Gainesville, Fla., is associate professor and graduate coordinator in the dept. of zoology at the Univ. of Florida.

Mark Burris, '85, Redwood Shores, Calif., is regional sales manager for AT&T Capital Corp. in its inventory financing division.

Juli Eflin , '85, '90, Muncie, Ind., is an associate professor of philosophy at Ball State Univ. and secretary-treasurer of the Indiana Philosophical Assoc.

Sandra L. Jones, '85, Bothell, is a certified social worker and geriatric mental health specialist working for LifeNet Health in Everett. She and her husband, Tom, have two children, Philip, 4, and Alison, 2.

Catherine Lee Mosteller, '85, Honolulu, is communications director for Iolani School in Honolulu. Her husband, Bob, '83, works for Aloha Airlines.

Chuck Anderson, '87, University Place, plans to take the test for state certification as a translator of Arabic. He also is founder of the Pierce County Kitefliers Assoc., one of the largest kite organizations in the nation.

Samantha E. Blake, '87, Pasadena, Calif., is an associate practicing business litigation with the firm of Kehr, Crook, Tovmassian & Fox.

Lt. Robert J. Cates, '87, Alameda, Calif., recently returned from a six-month stint aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson in the Persian Gulf.

Lt. Jeffrey A. Estefan, '87, Pt. Mugu, Calif., received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his work at the Pt. Mugu Naval Air Station.

Capt. Steven T. Gill, '87, Molesworth, England, is a senior watch intelligence officer working with NATO forces in support of Operation Joint Endeavor. He and his wife, Laura, have two sons.

Scott A. Johnson, '87, King George, Va., produced a music compact disk with alternative folk artist Joe Carlson. He also was selected for the Navy's Engineering Duty Officer program.

David Kowalchuk, '87, '89, Issaquah, has been promoted to regional sales trainer for the Ross Products Div. of Abbott Labs, and will be moving to Laguna Niguel, Calif., with his wife, Michelle, '89, and their daughter, Natalia.

Martina VanWagenen, '87, Federal Way, is a litigation paralegal at Lasher Holzapfel Sperry & Ebberson.

Christian Ericksen, '88, College Station, Texas, has started medical school at Texas A&M and celebrated eight years of marriage with David Ericksen, '90.

Bill Evidon, '88, Seattle, is the Latin America territory manager for Seattle-based software company WRQ.

Gillian K. Heather, '88, Seattle, says she is pondering returning for a master's degree but wants to travel to Europe and South America first.

Doug Ing, '88, Seattle, had his documentary, Leslie, premiere at the Seattle Asian American Film Festival in November.

Ingrid Russell-Narcisse, '88, Federal Way, sells corporate sponsorships for the Seattle Mariners. She has been married for two years.

Kevin Banks, '89, Woodinville, is director of sales and business development for METZ Software in Bellevue.

Timothy Lenderking, '89, Damascus, Syria, is a foreign service officer for the U.S. State Dept.

Alisabeth Buck Marsh , '89, Tacoma, is an instructor in Tacoma Community College's Human Services Program and a social worker in private practice.

Christine Yang Mueller, '89, Vancouver, is a senior financial analyst for Nike's apparel division. She has been married for five years.

Marine Capt. Scott E. Packard, '89, Parris Island, S.C., was one of 19,000 runners participating in the 21st annual Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C.

Leslee Paquette , '89, Renton, is a graphic designer at Renton Technical College and has her own graphic design business.

Barry R. Stangl , '89, Harbor City, Calif., is an assistant professor in the department of naval science at USC. He will retire from the Navy in July after 21 years of service.

Robin Ylvisaker , '89, '94, Seattle, and her husband, Kevin, announce the birth of their daughter, Allyson Shoreen, on Nov. 14.

1990

Myriam Gabriel , '90, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Jim Pollock, '90, were married on Sept. 7 in Seattle. She is a user support analyst at the Ford Foundation and he is a researcher at the Asahi Shimbun-New York Bureau.

John C. Hillman, '90, Edmonds, and his wife, Maria, announce the birth of Antonia Maria on Aug. 15. He is a deputy prosecutor in Pierce County.

Chris Platz, '90, Seattle, and his wife, Theresa Platz, '89, '96, welcomed their second child, Scott Thomas, on Dec. 8. Theresa is in her first year of residency at Valley Medical Ctr. in Renton and Chris takes care of the kids, plays viola and juggles.

Christina Ramus, '90, San Diego, received the San Diego Business Journal's Woman Who Means Business Award. She owns her own insurance and financial services firm.

Leslie Swackhamer, '90, Seattle, is associate artistic director at A Contemporary Theatre. She directed Jack Clay, former director of the UW's Professional Actors Training Program, as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol.

Sean K. Fay, '91, Seattle, formed Cesari Response Television Corp. in 1995 with "Juiceman Juicer" entepreneuer Rick Cesari. It produces informercials.

Kim Kacoroski , '91, Kirkland, is a second-year medical student at John Bastyr Univ.

Patricia A. Culbert, '92, Woodinville, is a mortgage consultant at Stonemark Mortgage Services.

Denise V. Fournier, '92, Livermore, Calif., married Kevin B. Fournier on June 29. She is a financial analyst for Sigma Circuits.

Rory F. Miranda, '92, Elmhurst, Ill., is a resident in the dept. of obstetrics and gynecology at the Univ. of Illinois-Chicago Med. Ctr.

Verna Harbaugh, '93, Everett, is corporate sales manager at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Conference Ctr. in Everett.

Robert Menna, '93, Seattle, is literary manager of Intiman Theatre and founder/executive director of the Seattle Playwrights Alliance.

1st Lt. John Lynn Schaures, '93, Kingsville, Texas, received his wings in October, made the commodore's list and is assigned to fly the F-18.

Ensign Gretchen M. Swanson, '93, Milton, Fla., serves with the Helicopter Training Squadron at Naval Air Station Whiting Field.

Mark Davies, '94, Seattle, is a design engineer for KPG, a Seattle architecture and civil engineering firm.

Misty Nordale, '94, Seattle, works for Sumitomo Corp. of America. Her first child, Emmiline Marie, was born on May 7.

Bonnie Sellen, '94, Seattle, is human resource director at William Dierickx Co. of Bellevue.

Byron Smith, '94, Milton, is traveling the country for BNSF Railroad, teaching a computerized train management system. His wife, Gloria, will graduate from UW-Tacoma's B.S.N. program this year.

Virginia M. White, '94, Olalla, is patient care supervisor in the emergency dept. at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton. She published an article in the September issue of the American Journal of Nursing.

Michael Backstrom, '95, Bremerton, is director of religious education at the Bangor submarine base in Silverdale.

Patrick T. Hallinan, '95, Portland, Ore., got married last March, and welcomed a baby, Xavier Thomas, in August.

Michael Kern, '95, Seattle, founded Madrona Resource Assoc., a Seattle public policy consulting firm.

Nataly Reeves, '95, Boulder, Colo., moved to Colorado with two kids after getting a divorce. She is secretary/planning assistant at Go Boulder, the city's department of alternative modes/transportation.

Sarah A. Sainsbury, '95, Los Angeles, has been working for a private community development project supporting entrepreneurs.

Dodi Nov , '96, Seattle, is a dentist working at the Bellevue practice of Jim Rosenwald, '68.
