FACULTY AND FRIENDS

Librarianship Professor Emeritus Eleanor E. Ahlers died Nov. 22, 1996, after serving the UW for 30 years. A Seattle native, she received undergraduate degrees from the UW and the Univ. of Denver but returned to the UW for a master's in 1957. Her focus was the link between libraries and school curricula. She retired in 1976. She was 85.

Accounting Professor Emeritus Durwood Alkire died July 6, 1996, after serving the UW since 1956. He joined the UW in 1956 as an associate lecturer in law. He retired in 1987. He was 89.

Art Professor Emeritus Glen E. Alps died Nov. 3, 1996, after serving the UW since 1945. Born in 1914 in Loveland, Colo., he received his undergraduate degree from Colorado State College and his M.F.A. from the UW in 1947. He had joined the UW faculty in 1945 and retired in 1984. He was 82.

Librarianship Professor Emeritus Leura Dorothy Bevis died July 23, 1996, after serving the UW for 39 years. She was born in 1904 in Duluth, Minn., and received undergraduate degrees from Pomona College, USC and a master's from the UW. She retired in 1971. She was 92.

Fisheries Dean Emeritus Douglas George Chapman died July 9, 1996, after serving the UW since 1949. The Canadian native got his bachelor's from the Univ. of Saskatchewan and two graduate degrees from the Univ. of California-Berkeley before joining the UW as an assistant professor of mathematics in 1949. He retired in 1980. He was 76.

Former Epidemiology and Nursing Professor Carrie E. Hall died Oct. 14, 1996, after serving the UW since 1965. She retired from the UW in 1982. She was 79.

Mathematics Professor Emeritus John Kingston died July 10, 1996, after serving the UW for 56 years. Born in Joliet, Ill., he received his undergraduate degree from the Univ. of Western Ontario and his graduate degrees from the Univ. of Toronto. He joined the UW in 1940 and retired in 1984. He was 82.

Social Work Professor Judy Kopp died Nov. 9, 1996, after serving the UW for 13 years. Born in St. Louis, she earned two graduate degrees from Washington Univ., focusing her research on interviewing skills. She joined the UW in 1983. She was 56.

Librarianship Lecturer Bernard Brook Lane died Oct. 26, 1996, after serving the UW from 1963. He received all three degrees from the UW. He was 84.

Liberal Studies Professor Clyde Patrick Morris died Sept. 27, 1996, after serving the UW for six years. He joined the UW in 1990 as a professor at the Bothell campus. He was 57.

Anesthesiology Professor Terrance Martin Murphy died July 23, 1996, after serving the UW since 1968. A native of Liverpool, England, he joined the UW in 1968. He was 59.

Former Pedodontics Professor John Charles Peterson Jr., died Oct. 16, 1996, after serving the UW from 1961 to 1975.

Geography Professor Emeritus John C. Sherman died Oct. 21, 1996, after serving the UW for 54 years. A native of Toronto, he taught for 44 years at the UW, specializing in cartography. Sherman was also the original designer of the UW campus map. He gave many hours to the research and publication of maps for the blind and maps for partially sighted children. He also authored and co-authored several books. He was 80.

Former UW Chief Counsel James B. Wilson died Oct. 14, 1996, after serving the UW from 1963 to 1988. A native of Visalia, Calif., he received a B.A. in 1948 and a law degree in 1950, both from the UW. As a member of the state's attorney general's office, he represented the UW for 25 of its most turbulent years. An avid traveler, he retired in 1988. He was 70.

English Professor Emeritus Elinore May Yaggy died July 1, 1996, after serving the UW since 1943. The native of Waterloo, Iowa, she helped many TAs learn the basics of university teaching at a time when little formal training for these activities existed. Her manual, How to Write Your Term Paper, is still in use today. She joined the UW in 1943 and retired in 1977. She was 89.
