FACULTY and FRIENDS

Education Professor Emeritus J. Robert Briggs, '35, '50, '54, died June 17, 1998, after serving the UW since 1947. He was born on Dec. 14, 1911 in Tacoma and joined the UW as an associate in accounting. He retired in 1976. He was 86.

Psychology Associate Professor Emeritus John W. Broedel died Aug. 20, 1998, after serving the UW since 1967. Born on May 24, 1929 in Mt. Carmel, Ill., he joined the UW in 1967 as an associate professor of psychology and education and later became director of the Student Counseling Center. He retired in 1991. He was 69.

Former UW Lecturer Richard J. Carbray, '44, '51, died Oct. 16, 1998, after serving the UW from 1975 to 1977. A devoted educator and renowned peace activist, he was perhaps best known for his involvement in picket lines protesting U.S. involvement in Vietnam and other issues. His 1992 book Prophets of Human Solidarity delved into the philosophy of such famous dissenters as Daniel and Phillip Berrigan, singer Paul Robeson, labor activist Harry Bridges and Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen. He was 81.

Education Professor Emeritus Henry R. Fea died June 5, 1998, after serving the UW since 1954. Born on Jan. 28, 1914 in Saskatchewan, he taught for 25 years until his retirement in 1979. He was 84.

Psychology Professor Emeritus Paul Eldon Fields died Sept. 6, 1998, after serving the UW since 1953. Born on Jan. 5, 1905, in Gillepolis, Ohio, he specialized in animal behavior. He joined the UW as a research fisheries psychologist and served on the faculty in psychology and fisheries. He retired in 1975. He was 93.

Pharmacy Professor Emeritus Louis Fischer, '26, '28, '33, died May 15, 1998, after serving the UW since 1929. Born on Aug. 18, 1905 in Seattle, he joined the faculty as a University Fellow in organic chemistry. He went on to teach pharmaceutical chemistry, served as associate dean of pharmacy and director of student affairs. He retired in 1975. He was 92.

Physics Professor and Graduate School Dean Emeritus Ronald Geballe died Oct. 28, 1998, after serving the UW since 1943. Born Feb. 7, 1918, in Redding, Calif., he earned three degrees from Cal-Berkeley and joined the UW in 1943 as an associate physicist. He became vice provost for research and dean of the graduate school in 1976. He retired in 1985. He was 80.

Retired Associate Professor of Social Work Manzer Griswold, '47, '52, died Oct. 2, 1998, after serving the UW since 1946. He spent many years as a research associate and instructor in the UW School of Social Work before becoming an assistant professor and research director of the UW Rehabilitation Institute in 1965. He retired in 1980. He was 82.

Professor Emeritus Thompson McClung Lewis, '55, of pediatric dentistry died July 13, 1998, after serving the UW since 1955. Born on Nov. 30, 1924 in Mineola, N.Y., he taught pedodontics and served as assistant dean. He retired in 1990. He was 73.

Associate Professor Emeritus Rowland E. Messer, '35, of mechanical engineering died Oct. 25, 1998, after serving the UW since 1946. Born Jan. 1, 1913 in Rolling Bay, Wash., he joined the UW as an instructor in general engineering. He taught until his retirement in 1977. He was 85.

Pediatrics Professor Donald A. Pious died Sept. 6, 1998, after serving the UW since 1964. He was 68.

Former Assistant Drama Professor Ruben Sierra, '74, died Oct. 29, 1998, after serving the UW from 1974 to 1979. He was the founder of Seattle's Group Theater, the city's first multicultural theater. The San Antonio native taught drama and Chicano/Latinio studies. He was 51.

Former Law School Dean and Professor George Neff Stevens died Sept. 23, 1998. He joined the UW as dean of the law school in 1953. After 10 years he stepped down to become a professor of law, and left the UW in 1969.

Civil Engineering Professor Emeritus Sandor Alexander Veress died Oct. 22, 1998, after serving the UW since 1963. Born March 13, 1927 in Jaszkiser, Hungary, he earned two degrees in Hungary and one in Canada before joining the UW in 1963. He retired in 1996. He was 71.

Former Assistant Professor Alma Miller Ware, '60, of physiological nursing died Aug. 23, 1998. She joined the UW faculty in 1968 and taught for 11 years before leaving in 1979.

Assistant Professor Emeritus Elizabeth Worthy, '64, of family and child nursing died Aug. 26, 1998, after serving the UW since 1966. She was 84.

Physics Professor Kenneth Kong Young, '59, died Nov. 5, 1998, after serving the UW since 1967. Born March 19, 1937 in Vancouver, B.C., he earned his bachelor's degree from the UW and a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania before joining the UW in 1967. He was 61.
