Journalism Group Honors Columns

Columns won six awards in the 2000 Excellence in Journalism Competition sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists, Western Washington Chapter, the organization announced at its May 20 banquet. This year the magazine also won two awards in a regional competition sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), District VIII.

The winners in the Society of Professional Journalists contest included a First Place Award to Columns Editor Tom Griffin for Social Issues Reporting (Magazines) for his article "True West" on the African-American experience in the West. There were two Second Place Awards: one to free-lancer Brad Broberg for Business Reporting (Magazines) for his "Frisky Business" article on the UW entrepreneurship program, the other to Griffin for his quarterly editor's columns, "Prelude."

A Third Place Award went to Columns Art Director Ken Shafer for Cover/Page Layout (Magazines). An Honorable Mention went to Columns Associate Editor Jon Marmor for Personalities (Magazines) for his article "Against All Odds," a profile of UW alumnus and Holocaust survivor Tom Lantos. An Honorable Mention also went to free-lancer Julie Garner for Science and Health Reporting (Magazines) for her piece called "Places in the Heart," an article on bacteria and heart disease.

In the CASE, District VIII, competition, the magazine won a Silver Award in Periodicals (20,000 circulation and higher) shared by Griffin, Marmor and Shafer. Griffin and Marmor also shared a Bronze Award in Periodical Team Writing. The regional competition judged publications produced by universities and colleges in five states and six Canadian provinces.

Since 1990, the magazine has won 112 awards for writing, editing, design, photography and overall periodical publishing in local, regional and national competitions.
