Former Neurosurgery Chair Resigns, Pleads Guilty in Billing Probe
Former UW Neurosurgery Chair H. Richard Winn resigned from the University July 16 and pleaded guilty to one count of obstruction of justice, the first legal settlement in a two-year probe of Medicare and Medicaid billing practices at the UW Academic Medical Center and affiliated medical groups.

Law School Admissions Legal, Judge Rules in 'Reverse Discrimination' Lawsuit
U.S. District Judge Thomas Zilly ruled June 5 that the University of Washington School of Law did not break any laws in a highly publicized "reverse discrimination" lawsuit involving three white students who were denied admission during the 1990s.

Pioneering Scientist to Head Genetics at UW
One of the world's most notable genome scientists, Robert H. Waterston, will become chair of the new Department of Genome Sciences at the UW School of Medicine, President Richard L. McCormick announced July 9. He will also hold the William Gates III Endowed Chair in Biomedical Sciences when he arrives at the UW in January.
