A Matter of the Mind: UW Experts Explore the Miracle of the Human Brain

The human brain and its miraculous abilities will be the topic of the 2002 UW Alumni Association/College of Arts and Sciences Fall Lecture Series, "The Art and Science of the Human Brain," which will be held on five Tuesdays beginning Oct. 15.

The guest speakers are UW faculty who specialize in the evolution, development, structure, function and possibilities of the organ that makes humans unique.

The first lecture on Oct. 15 features Psychology Professor Jaime Diaz, who will cover brain anatomy and physiology.

On Oct. 22, Earl Hunt, professor emeritus of psychology, will talk about artificial intelligence, computers and the brain.

On Oct. 29, the topic is language development in children. Patricia Kuhl, professor of speech and hearing sciences, and Psychology Professor Andrew Meltzoff, both of the UW Center for Mind, Brain and Learning, are the featured speakers.

On Nov. 5, Gerald Eck, associate professor of anthropology, will discuss the evolution of the human brain.

And on Nov. 12, William Calvin, an affiliate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, will talk about the differences between the brain and the mind.

The UW Fall Lecture Series will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 15, 22, 29, Nov. 5 and 12 in 120 Kane. Series tickets cost $50 for UWAA members or A&S Dean's Club members, $60 general and $20 students. Single tickets may be purchased beginning Oct. 1. Five dollars of each series pass supports student scholarships in the College of Arts and Sciences.
