• UW Faces $47 Million Drop in State Funds; Tuition to Rise 7 Percent. Faced with a $2.65 billion deficit, the state Legislature passed a plan that includes a $47 million cut for the UW, no new enrollments and a 7 percent hike for in-state undergraduate tuition.
• Record Number Apply to UW as State Freezes Enrollments. Recent applications confirm what officials hae been saying—it's getting harder and harder to enter UW as a freshman.
• Huskies Face Great Expectations Despite Coaching Change. Winning the Pac-10 title and earning the right to play in the Rose Bowl usually takes the leadership of a senior quarterback—just ask nine of the past 11 conference champions.

• Pacific Islander Group, Multicultural Center Win Brotman Awards. The two UW groups received the 2003 Brotman award for contributions to education and diversity.
• Bird Fights, Jazz Riffs Lead to Top Honors. Coming from Alaska, Brooks Miner wasn't sure he would like the big city. The music and zoology major leaves four years later with the school's higher honor for graduating seniors.

Bob Hope was the star attraction at the UW's 1969 Homecoming festivities. The legendary comedian performed two shows at Hec Edmundson Pavilion (before folk music concerts by the Brothers Four), and was joined by a bunch of lovely ladies for the Huskies' homecoming football game against USC. Hope had everyone laughing and smiling, but the Huskies didn't smile for long, losing 16-7 to the Trojans. File photo
