    FACULTY AND FRIENDS

    Clifford J. Barda, a longtime friend of the UW and the UWAA’s Multicultural Alumni Partnership, died on May 4, 2005. Barda supported MAP from the beginning, delegating a member of his staff to serve on the group’s board and helping plan and produce the annual Bridging the Gap breakfasts. In 1999, he received the MAP Special Award for his work with the organization. Barda spent more than three decades in the mental health field, developing and administering programs providing care and rehabilitative services for the chronically mentally ill. Prior to his retirement in 1999, he was CEO of Highline-West Seattle Mental Health Center and West Seattle Psychiatric Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Sue Tomita, ’70, ’95, who is also a MAP volunteer and is a past recipient of the group’s Distinguished Alumnae Award; his daughters, Justine and Jennifer Barda; and his step-son, Jason Rabbitt-Tomita.

    Norma M. Dimmitt, ’59, ’63, the University of Washington’s director of student teaching for 15 years, died May 18 in Wallingford. Dimmitt held a B.A. and an M.A. from the UW and a Ph.D. from Stanford. She was 86.

    Everett DuPen, a member of the UW faculty for nearly four decades and former chair of the sculpture division of the School of Art, died of congestive heart failure on May 25 in Bellevue. He showed work in many major galleries and museums and did dozens of public commissions, including the bust of former UW President Charles Odegaard at the Odegaard Undergraduate Library. As a teacher, DuPen saw to the core of his students—he convinced artist Dale Chihuly, ’65, to pursue his passion for glass. After retiring in 1982, he continued to convene a class every Wednesday night. That group of students still meets in the area, and its members still refer themselves as the “DuPen Academy of Sculpture.” He was 92.

    John O. Fish, who served for many years as director of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety at the UW, died May 1 in Bellevue. He had a lifelong love of learning, and was an avid bird-watcher and an active member of the Douglas County Historical Society. He was 84.

    Arnold S. Rosner, former professor of architecture, died March 27. A structural engineer, he worked on a number of major projects in Youngstown, Ohio, and Chicago, including the Marina Towers and O’Hare Airport. He came to Seattle in 1962 to work at Boeing, but soon began lecturing at the UW about engineering in architecture, and was awarded tenure. He stayed at the University for three decades. He was 79.

    Lesnick Westrum, ’63, a member of the UW Medical School faculty for many years, died May 14 in Seattle. Westrum received his medical degree from the UW in 1963. After earning a Ph.D. from University College, London University, he returned to the UW and joined the departments of neurological surgery and biological structure. A scholar of brain structure, he published widely and served on the editorial boards of several medical journals. He was 70.
