WINIFRED CEIS SAVERY, '49, of Edmonds, is retiring as an architect in public and private practice.

1950s

JEANINE LAAKSO ITURBIDE, '51, of San Leandro, Calif., retired in 1989 after 27 years with the Alameda County Social Services Agency.

DONNAJEAN EDDIE CARROLL-BARTON, '59, '69, of Yakima, is the author of two novels, Earthwalk and Earthwalk Two, both involving courtroom drama. She is a retired writer for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

NAKE'U JOEL AWAI, '60, of Honolulu, was honored at the 32nd annual 'O'o Awards Banquet for his work in fashion design. The award is presented to Native Hawaiians who have contributed to the betterment of Hawaiians and their professions.

MARY DAHEIM, '60, was inducted into the UW Department of Communication Hall of Fame in recognition of her more than 50 novels, including historical romance and mystery.

JOE JOHNSTON, '60, of Alta Loma, Calif., was the presiding judge of the Superior Court in San Bernardino County for two years.

SHIRLEY RUBLE, '61, of Seattle, received a Bronze Volunteer Service Award from President George W. Bush. She was a founding member of the American Association of Retired Persons Fraud Fighter Call Center in Washington state.

RUSSELL F. TROMLEY, '61, of Tualatin, Ore., was elected chairman of the board of directors of Northwest Natural.

ROSS E. KRAMER, '63, of Eagan, Minn., retired in 2000 as a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserves and as a Northwest Airlines captain. He practices law with Messerli & Kramer P.A., which he co-founded.

1970s

DAMARIS J. ROHSENOW, '70, '77, of Barrington, R.I., has been appointed to The Providence Center's Board of Trustees. She is a research professor of community health and an associate director of the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University.

BOB ANDERSON, '70, '72, of Spokane, retired as the director of environmental affairs of Avista Corporation after 36 years. His wife, MERI, '71, also retired this year as a registered dietitian.

DARIEL L. (BRADY) NORRIS, '74, of Preston, served as a community club member helping to oversee the construction of a regional park in Preston.

JEANNETTE ANDERSON MURPHY, '75, of Spokane, is an ergonomist and injury prevention specialist at St. Luke's Rehab in Spokane and presented at a Safe Patient Handling conference in April.

YOLANDA ALANIZ, '77, of Seattle, co-authored Viva la Raza, a book investigating Mexican American militancy from the 19th century to civil rights struggles in the present era.

TOM KUNDIG, '77, '81, of Seattle, has received a National Design Award in Architecture in recognition of excellence and innovation in design.

EDDIE PASATIEMPO, '77, of Seattle, has joined The Clarion Group, a management advisory firm, as a partner.

DEAN G. JAMIESON, '79, of Shoreline, has been elected to the National Council of the American Guild of Organists as the Pacific Northwest/Region VIII Councillor.

CAVIN PHILBIN, '79, of Bellingham, has been named to the board of directors of Five Talents International. He owns a seafood sales and marketing company, Ocean Foods.

1980s

MICHAEL MAHAN, '80, of Live Oak, Fla., was an active-duty Air Force pilot for 12 years following graduation. He then spent 16 years in the Air Force Reserves and as a pilot for American Airlines.

GEORGE W. JOHNSON, '81, of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., is a portfolio manager in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., and enjoys rooting for the Huskies when they play in Los Angeles.

PATRICIA A. DE LA FUENTE, '86, of Seattle, retired after 47 years as a nurse, discharge planner and clinical care coordinator with specialties in psychiatry, Alzheimer's and dementia.

ROBERT REAVIS, '87, of Glendale, Ariz., a Glendale Community College biology faculty member, was elected president of the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science (ANAS) in March. He is only the second community college faculty member to be named to the ANAS presidency in its 52-year history.

SHERRY GRINDELAND, '88, of Bellevue, was named the media and communications coordinator at Evergreen Healthcare. She recently left the Seattle Times, where she was a reporter and columnist.

GREG LANE, '88, of Olympia, has been chosen as the new president and CEO of TVW, a statewide public affairs cable television network. He has been deputy chief of staff for Washington state Attorney General ROB MCKENNA, '85, since 2006.

1990s

KEVIN MINSKY, '93, of Sammamish, returned to the Seattle area in 2006 to work as senior telecom regulatory counsel for Microsoft, advising on the application of telecom laws.

DAVE BLAND, '94, of Germantown, Tenn., and DAVID FLEER, '95, of Rochester, Mich., are co-authors of a new book, Preaching John's Gospel: The World It Imagines. The two authors have written or collaborated on a total of nine books.

MIKE SHANAHAN, '94, of Honolulu, is the education director at the Bishop Museum, the primary museum of Hawaiian culture and natural history.

LISA JILL (KIRIHARA) DICKINSON, '95, '99, of Spokane, opened Dickinson Law Firm, PLLC. She continues to practice law with emphasis in small-business law, contracts and civil litigation.

RAMONA N. HUNTER, '98, '01, was named a member of Cozen O'Connor law firm.

SIMON CANICK, '00, of West Hartford, Conn., was named associate dean for information resources and assistant professor of law at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minn.

ALYSSA POE RYAN, '01, and husband Connor welcomed a son, William Poe Ryan, on May 17.

KATHERINE BUCK, '02, of Crownsville, Md., is the executive director of Senior Bridge in Baltimore and will attend the University of Maryland, Baltimore, this fall for an M.S. in nursing.

ERIN EASTER, '05, of San Bruno, Calif., is the lead technical writer for Tableau Software and continues to work with Excition, a commencement products company she helped found in 2005. Excition was recently awarded several contracts for UW graduation products.

JAMES R. BOCINSKY, '04, of Issaquah, marked his third anniversary working with Michael Keever and Keever Capital, which has seen triple-digit growth each year since its founding in 2004.

CHELSEA KING, '05, of Portland, Ore., works in the Wells Fargo Financial Analyst Program and will move to San Francisco in September for the bank's Credit Management Training Program.

DESIREE MCELROY, '05, of Tacoma, graduated from Saint Martin's University with an M.A. in counseling psychology.

CODY MONTOYA, '05, says he is enjoying the beach in San Pedro, Calif. He works for an environmental consulting firm and volunteers at the SEA Lab aquarium in Redondo Beach, Calif.

ALEX WHITE, '06, of Seattle, manages a retail flag and flagpole business and proudly supports the Huskies.

SHAINA EBEL, '07, of Edmonds, works for State Farm Insurance.

KELLI (SCHURB) WOOD, '07, moved to Petersburg, Alaska, and got married. She now works for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and is starting "Summer Science Saturdays" for children at the Petersburg Marine Mammal Center, where she is a board member at large.

On June 13, KRISTY GAUTHIER, '08, became the fourth member of her immediate family to graduate from the UW, joining father Al, '79, mother Becky, '80, and brother Doug, '06. Kristy's license plate celebrates this family tradition.

MICHAEL W. PERRY, of Seattle, recently published a new book, Chesterton on War and Peace: Battling the Ideas and Movements that Led to Nazism and World War II.

PHILLIP CRAIG TURNER, of Plano, Texas, was named senior vice president of Ipsh!, a mobile marketing agency.

Aluminaries

LUIS SINCO, '82, a photographer for the Los Angeles Times whose picture of the "Marlboro Marine" has become one of the most iconic wartime images in recent history, received the 2008 Sidney Hillman Foundation Journalism Award for photojournalism. The photo caught Marine Lance Cpl. James Blake Miller after a night of fi ghting in Fallujah, his face caked with blood and dirt, a lit cigarette dangling from his lips. In 2007, Sinco wrote and published a personal essay called "The Marlboro Marine: Two lives blurred together by a photo" (reprinted as "Saving Corporal Miller" in the March 2008 issue of Columns). The Hillman Foundation award recognized both Sinco's extraordinary photos and his equally fine prose.

After growing up impoverished in India, JEET BINDRA, '70

, emigrated to the United States in the late 1960s with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering under his belt and $8 in his pocket. He took out a loan for a plane ticket to Seattle and headed straight to the UW to earn his master's degree from the College of Engineering. Today, Bindra is the president of Chevron Global Manufacturing and a recent recipient of the prestigious Diamond Award from the UW College of Engineering. Once told that he would have trouble moving into upper management because of his accent and the way he looked, Bindra defied expectations through hard work and perseverance.
