LUIS SINCO, '82, a photographer for the Los Angeles Times whose picture of the "Marlboro Marine" has become one of the most iconic wartime images in recent history, received the 2008 Sidney Hillman Foundation Journalism Award for photojournalism. The photo caught Marine Lance Cpl. James Blake Miller after a night of fi ghting in Fallujah, his face caked with blood and dirt, a lit cigarette dangling from his lips. In 2007, Sinco wrote and published a personal essay called "The Marlboro Marine: Two lives blurred together by a photo" (reprinted as "Saving Corporal Miller" in the March 2008 issue of Columns). The Hillman Foundation award recognized both Sinco's extraordinary photos and his equally fine prose.
After growing up impoverished in India, JEET BINDRA, '70
, emigrated to the United States in the late 1960s with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering under his belt and $8 in his pocket. He took out a loan for a plane ticket to Seattle and headed straight to the UW to earn his master's degree from the College of Engineering. Today, Bindra is the president of Chevron Global Manufacturing and a recent recipient of the prestigious Diamond Award from the UW College of Engineering.
