Durward (Huck) Huckabay, '48, and Susan Huckabay of Nevada have contributed $5 million, one of the largest gifts the UW ever has received from alumni. Both Huckabays attended the UW, and their gift establishes four endowments honoring their families' ties to the University over two generations.
"Education is important to us," say the Huckabays. "Over the years we've contributed to the University, and now we wanted to honor our fathers."
The largest endowment is the Durward A. Huckabay M.D. Endowed Fund in Medicine. It honors Huck's father, a physician whose financial struggles as a medical student were intensified when his parents died and he assumed responsibility for two brothers and two sisters. The endowment will provide scholarships for medical students and other support for the School of Medicine.
The Huckabays designated $750,000 of their gift for three endowments, matched with state funds, that will support faculty or graduate students in any field of study.
* The Russell F. Stark University Professorship honors Susan Huckabay's father, a 1927 UW law school graduate who practiced law in the state of Washington and was active in community affairs.
* The James W. Mifflin University Professorship honors Susan's stepfather, who received both his undergraduate and law degrees from the UW and served as a judge on the Superior Court of King County from 1960 to 1980.
* The Durward and Susan Huckabay Endowed Fellowship is named for the donors.
Although they live far from Seattle, the Huckabays maintain many ties to the UW and the UW Alumni Association. They enjoy travelling and have taken several trips with the UW Alumni Association, most recently the "Silk Road" tour to China.
