FACULTY AND FRIENDS

Mathematics Associate Professor Emeritus Sherwin Parker Avann died May 22, 1996, after serving the UW since 1946. A Seattle native who earned his bachelor's degree in math at the UW in less than three years--despite being nearly blind--he was obsessed with perfection and was class valedictorian. A President's Medalist, he was known for having a photographic memory, especially when it came to numbers. His specialty was lattics, or geometric arrangements of points or objects in space. In addition to his research and teaching, he was active in the Mountaineers and had climbed most major peaks in the Western U.S. He also taught climbing and enjoyed skiing. He even was a timer at UW track meets, and was able to see by wearing special contact lenses. He was 83 when he died of heart failure.

Pathology Professor Emeritus Earl P. Benditt died May 27, 1996, after serving the UW since 1957. An internationally recognized expert for his work in experimental and chemical pathology, he developed methods to analyze and identify specific chemical reactions in cell tissue. Born April 15, 1916 in Philadelphia, he graduated with highest honors from Swarthmore College and earned his medical degree from Harvard in 1941. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1974. His studies led to better understanding of the nature of a class of proteins called amylods, which play a role in Alzheimer's disease. He was 80.

Humanistic Social Studies Professor Emeritus Jay Anders Higbee died March 23, 1996, after serving the UW since 1952. A native of Iowa City, Iowa, he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa before getting a master's at the UW in 1949 and a doctorate from Syracuse in 1955. He joined the UW in 1962 as an instructor and taught until his retirement in 1982. He was 76.

Women's Physical Education Professor Emeritus Mary Kathro Kidwell died April 29, 1996, after serving the UW since 1939. Born Aug. 9, 1905, in West Point, N.Y., she earned her undergraduate degree from the Univ. of Nebraska and graduate degrees from the Univ. of Wisconsin and Columbia Univ. A past president of the Faculty Women's Club, she served in many national organizations and was a longtime member at St. James Cathedral. She was 90.

Drama Associate Professor Emeritus Warren "Tyke" Lounsbury died May 10, 1996, after serving the since 1948. A native of Olympia, he received his undergraduate degree from Western Reserve Univ. in 1946 and his master's from the UW in 1953. He was 82.

Speech and Hearing Sciences Professor Emeritus John M. Palmer died April 26, 1996, after serving the UW since 1952. He inspired hundreds of students as an outstanding teacher, clinician, counselor and role model. He established a lab in the anatomy department for student education and continued to offer the course without compensation until shortly before his death. He retired in 1991. He was 73 when he died at his Shoreline home after a brief illness.

Senior Law Lecturer John Sullivan died April 21, 1996, after serving the UW since 1979. A native of Seattle, he received his bachelor's and law degrees from the UW and taught here from 1979 to 1992. He was 71.

Oceanography Professor Emeritus Pierre Welander died April 21, 1996, after serving the UW since 1971. Born on Christmas Day in 1925 in Nice, Sweden, he received undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Univ. of Stockholm. He was 70.

Women's Physical Education Professor Emeritus Ruth Wilson died May 6, 1996, after serving the University since 1936. Born in Cripple Creek Colo., on Sept. 18, 1910, she earned her B.S. from the Univ. of Utah in 1931 and her master's from the Univ. of Wisconsin in 1936. She was 85.

Zoology Professor Emeritus Arthur Zvihla died March 16,1996, after serving the UW since 1938. The Chicago native got his bachelor's degree from the Univ. of Illinois in 1925 and his graduate degrees from the Univ. of Michigan. He was 93.
