Columns Wins National Award for Magazine Redesign

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education recognized Columns Magazine for its 1998 redesign with a Bronze Award in Magazine Publishing Improvement, awarded July 19 during the council's National Assembly held in Boston.

Columns competed against magazines published by higher education institutions across the U.S. and Canada for the honor, which cited the contributions of Editor Tom Griffin, Associate Editor Jon Marmor and Art Director Ken Shafer. The council is a professional organization for fund-raising, alumni relations and communications in higher education.

The Columns team transformed the front and back of the magazine, turning a dull, grid-like layout into a colorful, active design, judges said.

Last year the council also gave the magazine a Bronze Award for its article on the 1948 Canwell hearings, "Seeing Red," by UW Writer Nancy Wick.

For its 1998 issues, Columns received a total of 19 awards in national, regional and local competitions. For the fourth year in a row, the Washington Press Association named Columns the top four-color magazine in the state published by a non-profit organization.

The press association also gave First Place Awards to Griffin for publication editing, Marmor for feature photography and Shafer for page layout.

The Western Washington Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists gave Columns six award for its 1998 issues, including a First Place Award in Sports Reporting to Marmor for his article on Basketball Coach Bob Bender, “Shooting Star,” and First Place Award in Education Reporting to UW Writer Nancy Wick for her article on learning disabilities research, “Learning Curves.”

Since it was founded in 1989, the magazine has won 104 awards for writing, editing, design, photography and overall periodical publishing.
