Book It: Famous, Obscure Works Featured in Literary Lecture Series

Love to get together with friends to talk about a great book? Well, the UW Alumni Association is giving you the chance to join a somewhat larger book club when the UWAA Fall Lecture Series kicks off in October. The Fall Lecture Series is sponsored by the UWAA, College of Arts & Sciences, and PEMCO Financial Services.

For four Wednesday evenings, come to campus and join the discussion as faculty in the UW English department talk about the works of authors who have had a lasting impact on 20th century American life and culture.

Take your seat in 210, enjoy coffee and desserts, and take part in the discussion as each UW teacher goes over the works of major American authors-and those not so well known-who have touched our lives.

When you sign up for the series, you will receive a reading list of the books to be discussed, giving you time to brush up on some classics.

The lectures will take place the evenings of Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27. On Oct. 6, Professor Ross Posnock, who specializes in social, political and cultural thought from 1850 to the present, will discuss Henry James' The American Scene, Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie and W.E.B. Du Bois' The Souls of Black Folk.

On Oct. 13, Professor Leroy Searle, an expert on critical theory and modern literature, will lead a discussion. Professor Shelly Eversley, who specializes in 20th century African American literature, race theory and legal theory, will talk on Oct. 20. The fourth discussion will be on Oct. 27. The speaker has yet to be determined.

Cost of the series is $25 for UWAA members; $30 for non-members; and $15 for students. Individual tickets may be available at the door. To register, call the UWAA registration line at (206) 543-3839.

Now is also the time to save the dates for the UWAA Winter Lecture Series, featuring ever-popular History Professor Emeritus Jon Bridgman. Bridgman will be lecturing on "1940 Retrospect," covering the United States' entrance and involvement in World War II.

The dates of the UWAA Winter Lecture Series are Jan. 12, 19 and 26, and Feb. 2, 9 and 16, 2000. You can sign up for Bridgman's series beginning in November.
