Forest Resources Professor and Dean Emeritus James Samuel Bethel, '37, died May 18 after serving the UW since 1962. Bethel served as dean of the UW College of Forestry from 1964-1985. He was responsible for starting the pulp and paper program, and oversaw the construction of new buildings. He retired in 1981, but recently completed the manuscript for a history of the forestry industry in the U.S. He was 83. Economics Professor Emeritus Philip Cartwright died March 13 after having served the University from 1947 to 1984. Born on March 24, 1919, in Pasadena, Calif., he earned all three degrees from Stanford Univ. Before retiring in 1984, he served as assistant director of the Institute of Labor Economics and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He was 79. Attorney John Caughlan, '31, died April 17 in Seattle. A longtime community activist for leftist causes, he was the lawyer for UW Philosophy Professor Herbert Phillips, for one of three tenured professors fired in 1949 after the Legislature's Canwell Committee investigated the UW for anti-American activity. He was 89. Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Professor Emeritus John Lawrence Hampson died May 8, after serving the UW since 1960. He did groundbreaking research in the establishment of human gender role. He joined the UW in 1960, served as head of adult outpatient psychiatry and chief of staff at UW Medical Ctr. He retired in 1987. He was 77. Civil Engineering Professor Emeritus Robert Graham Hennes died April 5 after having served the University since 1934. He served as chairman of civil engineering and secretary of the faculty before retiring in 1973. He was 93. Oceanography Professor Emeritus Dora Henry died June 16, after a 67-year association with the UW. She joined the UW faculty in 1932 and was known as "the barnacle lady" because she was a renowned authority on the life history and biology of Pacific Coast barnacles. She retired in 1988. She was 95. Mathematics Professor Emeritus Edwin Hewitt died June 21 after serving the UW for 40 years. Born and reared in Everett, he attended Harvard Univ. and was was on the swimming team with future president John F. Kennedy He taught at Harvard, served in World War II and came to the UW in 1948. When Kennedy visited Seattle to speak at the UW centennial in 1961, he borrowed Hewitt's academic gown. In addition to his teaching career, Hewitt served as chair of the Faculty Senate. He retired in 1988. He was 79. Psychology Professor Emeritus A. Paul Horst died March 16. He joined the UW in 1947 and later served as executive director of the division of counseling and testing before retiring in 1969. He was 95. John Otis Jarstad, a former broadcaster of UW football and basketball, died June 12. He was 78. He was a TV broadcaster for KOMO, KIRO, KTVW and served as the voice of Seattle Rainiers baseball, UPS and PLU football in addition to his work for the Huskies. Psychology Professor Neil Jacobson died June 1, after serving the UW since 1979. A prominent researcher whose interests included depression, domestic violence and the efficacy of marital therapy, he and UW colleague John Gottman did pioneering research into domestic violence and in 1988 co-authored the book When Men Batter Women. He was 50. Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Professor Emeritus Joan C. Martin died April 6, after serving the UW since 1972. In addition to teaching, she served as associate dean of student affairs for the Graduate School and was chair of the Faculty Senate. She retired in 1997. She was 68. Architecture Professor Emeritus Donald Radcliffe died March 18 after having served the University since 1947. A structural engineer known for his flair for design, he was the lead structural engineer for the design of the original SeaTac Airport Parking Garage. He retired in 1980. He was 88. Law Professor Emeritus Elizabeth Roe Wilkins, '36, '38, '40, died April 26, after serving the UW since 1965. She joined the UW as an assistant law librarian in 1965. In 1983, she was promoted to law librarian and professor of law. She retired in 1985. She was 83. Neil D. Uhlman, '56, retired director of industrial and community relations in the College of Engineering, died June 24. During his seven years at the UW, Uhlman was involved in securing funds for the college's DO-IT Program and the new electrical engineering/computer science building. He retired in 1996. He was 65. |
