LADINO 100 Elementary Ladino (5) A&H
Introduces the Ladino language, Sephardic culture, and cultural encounters throughout the Balkans, Eastern Mediterranean, and Middle East. Covers fundamental grammatical features and builds vocabulary through primary sources (both in Rashi and Romanization). Recommended: courses in modern Jewish history or history of the modern Middle East, or language courses in Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew, Turkish, or Arabic.

LADINO 200 Guided Readings in Ladino (5) A&H
Delves into Sephardic culture through nineteenth and twentieth-century Ladino sources. Develops practical and critical skills for interacting with Ladino texts while exploring transformations in social and historical contexts through folklore, literature, the press, theater, music, and humor. Prerequisite: LADINO 100; recommended: courses in modern Jewish history or history of the modern Middle East, or language courses in Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew, Turkish, or Arabic.
